Hi! Future Ticia 2025 is updating this absolutely ancient post from 2012. I’m going to update our original geography lesson and make the pictures a little brighter, actually include the books I found now that Amazon doesn’t let me use the old widget I had. But then I’ll add into my United States Geography what we did when we did a quick refresher when the kids were in high school right before they graduated. I figured they probably didn’t remember much of what we studied back in second grade.

Back to Past Ticia 2012:
Our Original Rhode Island Unit
This is one of those states where I just didn’t have much to go on. So if you live in the area or have been there I’d love some extra suggestions of what else to tell people about for when I write for ABC & 123 (link removed because I don’t know that it’s still a trustworthy site).

Don’t you just love all of the empty space on Princess’ pages (picture 1)? She was quite insistent on gluing it all in this way……. Sigh, and she lost her carousel symbols.
Carousels- Rhode Island was the site of the first carousels in America, and was famous for the designs on their carousels. For that alone I want to go there.
Yes, I liked carousels. I’m a complete sucker for them.
Nathaniel Greene (picture 3)- a famous general from the Revolutionary War, and there was not one book about him specifically at our library. Sigh, so I made something up using Wikipedia.
Finding Providence (picture 2)- I did not write a post on this one because I didn’t have any pictures of the activity. And now I see why having taken a picture of the end results. The activity was to write down different ways you can know or learn God’s will, because Roger Williams, the founder of Rhode Island, trusted to God’s Providence.
It’s a good activity, just not very photogenic or exciting.
Seriously, any other suggestions. Christy from Snacks and Stories (she used to blog at Superheroes and Princesses, blog is now private) gave me some good suggestions of making “Cabinets,” which sound a lot like milkshakes, I think Phyllis from All Things Beautiful had a similar suggestion.
Rhode Island Unit Resources

And from here on out, the rest of this post is written by Future Ticia 2025 for when I reschedule this post with all these great new resources.
First, let’s get some resources online with some great facts and information:
Those are three good sites for getting you basic information your elementary kid would need for any state report.
Now, let me find you some YouTube videos. From my quick glance at the Nat Geo webpage, I saw they have their rapping bird video…
That’s right, enjoy the weird rapping birds singing about Rhode Island. It will be the most enjoyable video for you the adult.
Now, take D6 psychic damage because you just watched Homeschool Pop, and his voice is grating, but it’s probably the only channel that has videos for every single state.
And then there’s this. So apparently, you can also get that. I don’t know. What to do with that.
Okay…. My library sadly did not have a lot of books, so are you ready for my SUPER impressive collection of Rhode Island books?
Rhode Island books
I tried to research some other topics to add a few more books beyond this, but Rhode Island is a very small state, so there is not a lot of space for things to happen in.
I haven’t read most of these because I didn’t get a chance to pick these books up ahead of time when I updated this post, quite sadly.
- Rhode Island– A good solid book about the state, but not one you’ll just read
- Rhode Island– Another solid book for a state report
- Nickommohl: a Thanksgiving celebration– I want to go read this book, because it sounds fascinating and it wasn’t there when we studied this ages ago. But, it’s the tale of a Native American group’s celebration.
- Hens for friends– Looks to be an interesting book about a Rhode Island hen
- The Bravest Woman in America– Ida Lewis, lighthouse keeper in Newport, Rhode Island, which would be fun to read
- Finding Providence: the story of Roger Williams– This book I DO remember, it was a really interesting story to read of how Roger Williams found Providence, and it’s the activity I talked about up above with Providence

Rhode Island Notebooking Pages
When we went back and studied this again in high school, we just did a quick review to make sure the kids knew more or less where it was, and we did not fill out the minibooks again, though I still have them, and they are on my Subscriber page (JOIN MY NEWSLETTER to get access, AND in the welcome cycle you get a coupon code to get the United States notebooking pages FREE).
So, we just filled out the United States notebooking pages in high school because at that point I had hit the, “Oh crud, I am running out of time and we need to get serious about finishing.”

I didn’t really write much in this. I think this is one of the times we watched Homeschool Pop, and I just hate Homeschool Pop. In case you can’t tell from my constant jokes about taking psychic damage from watching it.
So like literally all you can see is just barely anything written down on this. It’s rather pathetic. I don’t know what I was thinking.
