5th-grade books made into movies
I think 5th grade can often be a sweet spot for reading. The kids are old enough to start having great discussions, they are reading more or less independently, and the books are short enough that parents can easily read along with their kids and still read whatever books they want to read. It also has a lot of books made into movies that I absolutely adore

(there are so many affiliate links in here)
I am splitting these up by the organization of the books on the bookmarks. I attempted to split the books up so it is a mix of older and newer books.
The first 10 5th-grade books made into movies
- Misty of Chincoteague– my childhood copy of the book is well-worn movie (Misty of Chincoteague book club)
- Pollyanna movie (Pollyanna book club)
- Black Cauldron– I happen to dislike the Black Cauldron movie because it so messed up the book (Black Cauldron book club)
- Indian in the Cupboard– This was our very first book and a movie night (Indian in the Cupboard book club)
- The Giver– I was a few years too old for this to be on my required reading, but my friends three years younger than me rave about it movie (The Giver book club)
- Alice in Wonderland I read this book so much and watched the movie so much I quoted it when we watched it recently (Alice in Wonderland book club)
- Tuck Everlasting– I read this in 6th grade, but it can work in 5th movie (Tuck Everlasting book club)
- Ella Enchanted– This movie is second to Bunnicula in being brought up as a terrible movie night (Ella Enchanted book club)
- Hotel for Dogs movie
- The House with a Clock in its Walls movie– I read this when the movie was coming out, and I’ll say preview it because it can be somewhat creepy, reading level it is closer to 4th, but the creepiness factor is pretty high
Oh man, looking at these books, there are some books I loved reading so much when we read them. Seriosly, some great book and a movie combos.
I don’t know if I could pick a favorite for this particular set of books, many of these were my childhood favorites, and some were some of my kids’ favorites.

Second 10 5th-grade books made into movies
And here comes the second set of books. I don’t really have much to say, I just want to break up the list so it’s not just super long list of books.
In theory, this makes it easier to read the list.
- Water Horse movie
- Sign of the Beaver movie (Sign of the Beaver book club)
- BFG– Confession, I don’t really like the book, and I didn’t like the movie (BFG book club)
- Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie other movie (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory book club)
- Lassie movie
- Justin Morgan Had a Horse– I read this book so many times as a kid movie (Justin Morgan had a Horse book club)
- Johnny Tremain– great movie for an American Revolution unit (and our Johnny Tremain movie night was a huge hit)
- Howl’s Moving Castle– I wish more of her books were adapted, but it made for a great movie night (Howl’s Moving Castle book Club)
- Heidi movie (Heidi book club)- huh, I thought I’d written about that one
- Sounder movie
This is a little easier to pick from, I love Howl’s Moving Castle, partially because I love the author, and then we had a fun book club, and then I watched it with my high school girls.

Final set of books made into movies
Sadly, the counter starts over each time I recopy the list, I probably could take time to figure out how to fix it, but I’ll be honest, I don’t care that much.
Oh, funny story, I recently wrote an article for another site, and I had to do so much editing because I don’t write very formally here, and that is not the style of writing for that other site. Oops.
- Litlle Broomstick movie (Mary and the Witch’s Flower)
- Escape to Witch Mountain movie
- Incredible Journey movie (Homeward Bound)
- Rescuers movie
- Bedknobs and Broomsticks movie– 2 things: 1. this book is much darker than the Disney movie from my memory of reading it as a kid, and 2. the 30th-anniversary edition has a VHS version!
- Honey, I Shrunk the Kids movie
- My Father’s Dragon Netflix original
- Tiger Rising movie
- Flora and Ulysses Disney+ movie- this has since been removed from Disney+ I heard, so I don’t know if it is now possible to watch… The downside of things only being available on streaming.
- My Friend Flicka movie
Of these, we haven’t done a bookclub for any of these. I really enjoyed the Rescuers books when I read them as a kid, but I didn’t have time to read it with the kids. I should spend some time to read these and figure out what I want to do with it.

Great list, and I love that you turn these into bookmarks
I did not know some of these were movies. Thank You! I am so excited to see a few.
Ticia, thank you so much for all of your work on this blog! You are definitely a resource I return to for my own homeschool planning AND it is also just really nice to see blogs that are still active. Gives me warm fuzzies. 🙂 Thanks!! Kelly
