Africa Unit geography

Africa Unit

Sometimes we form odd associations. There is this absolutely silly video of countries playing Risk at the end of the video the different countries playing all decide to invade Africa, because that’s what all of Europe did in the 1800s. I’m not really sure why it didn’t happen until the 1800s. But now whenever I say Africa, I have to repeat it using that really bad accent. The kids get to hear it a lot right now in our geography lessons as we keep circling back to our Africa unit and learning about another two countries in Africa.

Our primary Africa Unit resource

Here is the way libraries work, they have books for the most popular countries people write reports on. That means my library has a whole bunch of books about Egypt, and maybe one or two about every other country in Africa.

So, most of what we learned about Africa came from YouTube, and our favorite Geography Now channel.

Interesting, I think most of Africa’s countries are already completed. Sweet, that means I won’t have to search for many random videos as we complete Africa.

Okay, let’s split up Africa into different regions, after creating my Asia Unit post I figured out that’s a great way to do it.

Northern Africa Unit

Northern Africa mostly consists of the countries that touch the Mediterranean Sea, and then one or two more to the West.

Most of these are past where we’ve reached alphabetically. I’ll be adding units in as we complete them.

  • Algeria Unit
  • Canary Islands- not a country, it’s a region of Spain…
  • Ceuta Unit- ummm this isn’t on the list I made a few years ago, now I must find out about this country, okay it’s an autonomous city, that’s why it wasn’t there
  • Egypt Unit
  • Libya Unit
  • Madeira Unit
  • Melila Unit
  • Morocco Unit
  • Sudan Unit
  • Tunisia Unit

Okay, that’s that section of Africa.

Eastern Africa unit

This has the largest amount of countries, partially because there are several smaller countries.

  • Burundi Unit
  • Comoros Unit
  • Djibouti Unit
  • Eritrea Unit
  • Ethiopia Unit
  • French Southern Territories- again Wikipedia, not a country
  • Kenya Unit
  • Malawi Unit
  • Mauritius Unit
  • Mayotte- apparently France has lots of territories still in Africa…
  • Mozambique Unit
  • Reunion- another overseas department of France
  • Rwanda Unit
  • Seychelles Unit
  • Somalia Unit
  • South Sudan Unit
  • Tanzania Unit
  • Uganda Unit
  • Zambia Unit
  • Zimbabwe Unit

Moving on to Middle Africa

Middle Africa Unit

Okay, Easter Africa had a lot of countries in it, but middle Africa has relatively the same amount of land, but fewer countries.

Southern Africa Unit

Another large land mass with few countries section. Honestly, what is there to say here?

Almost done, here comes West Africa!

West Africa Unit

I’m literally scrolling down through the regions of Africa page, now I would have thought West Africa would be up top, because that’s how my mind works, traveling left to right, top to bottom. I think this list went vaguely in some sort of clockwise manner.

  • Benin Unit
  • Burkina Faso Unit
  • Cape Verde (Cabo Verde) Unit
  • Cote d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) Unit
  • The Gambia Unit- as I’m typing this (not when it’s going to be published), we just studied the Gambia, I can now tell you it was published on March 6, 2024
  • Ghana Unit
  • Guinea Unit
  • Guinea-Bissau Unit
  • Liberia Unit
  • Mali Unit
  • Mauritania Unit
  • Niger Unit
  • Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha- British territory off the coast of Africa
  • Senegal Unit
  • Sierra Leone Unit
  • Togo Unit

And that’s it, that’s all of the Africa countries. There are quite a lot of them, Africa probably has about 1/4 of all the countries in the world (there are roughly 200 or so countries in the world).
