Okay, Algeria. I don’t have anything super impressive to say for my introduction, so I’ll just go with, here is our Algeria Unit as part of our geography lessons. You know, I really need to create an Africa landing page…. Adds that to my ever-growing to-do list.

Algeria Unit Resources
We sadly had no books about Algeria, and because Algeria
Our always favorite Geography Now video:
Since it’s fairly early in the alphabet, it’s a relatively short video, and doesn’t have as much information as later videos.
Algeria Unit recipes: Algerian Roast Chicken
I did a bit of searching and found this Algerian Roast Chicken recipe for our meal, and it turned out great. I will say, it’s not super flavorful, but it was a meal everyone liked. I still haven’t figured out how to cook a whole roasted chicken and get a decent flavor throughout the chicken (if anyone has suggestions, let me know)
Algerian Roast Chicken Ingredients
- 1 cup water
- 1onion chopped
- 5 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (pardon me do you have any Grey Poupon?)
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- salt to taste
- 1 whole chicken
Let’s make that chicken!
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees
- Mix water, onion, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, Dijon mustard, garlic, pepper, cayenne pepper, and salt in a roasting dish. I personally think it would work better if you mixed the mustard, garlic, pepper, and cayenne pepper together, and then rubbed that all on the chicken, but I didn’t do it that way and instead followed the directions.
- Add chicken, turn until well coated with the mixture.
- Bake in preheated oven until the thermometer read 165 degrees, about 1.5 hours
- I served it with orzo with parmesan and onions (a favorite side dish for our family)

Algeria Unit notebooking pages
We used the Africa notebooking pages and filled in all of the information, which apparently I still haven’t uploaded. Sigh.
Here are the cool facts I found:
- sand, so much sand (insert Anakin Skywalker quote)
- 90% of the country lives near the Mediterranean
- only 3% of the country is arable, which means they import large amounts of their food
Okay, we don’t have a super impressive Algeria unit, so if you know some good Algeria resources, let me know about them.
