And then there’s the times you just want to jump out of the car
Ordinarily, I love my kids. I love seeing them learn things. That light in their eyes as they suddenly get it. The fun they have. Their laughter. And then there are moments like this drive home.
We’d just had an awesome time seeing Kung Fu Panda with a friend. We saw it at the Alamo Drafthouse, so we got lunch as well there. Delicious margherita pizza, which the kids took the tomatoes and “green things” off of.
We laughed, had fun. As we were getting ready to leave I asked if anyone had to go potty.
Superman said he did, but he wanted to wait until he got home. Can you see where the problem will arise?
So, we begin the 20-minute drive home. At the point we’re halfway Superman is begging me to pull over. There isn’t really an easy spot to stop. We were on a toll road. They don’t really like you pulling over on the side of the road.
I’m begging him to just wait a few more minutes. That’s when Princess starts in with her claim she needs to go potty.
Finally we stop at a gas station less than FIVE minutes from our house. I get a Dr. Pepper, well deserved at this point I might add. Superman goes potty. Princess was made to wait in the car, because in my experience she didn’t really need to go, just didn’t want to be left out.
Batman did his big brother job of locking the door and keeping watch for me (I left the car running, so they wouldn’t die from heat exhaustion, this is Texas after all).
Well, Superman and I got back, and Batman can’t figure out how to unlock the door. He’s done this at least a dozen times before (this is the new responsibility they’ve gotten for things that will take me less than 5 minutes). But, suddenly he kept pushing it the wrong way, and I’m trying to yell instructions to him through the window, and he keeps trying.
At this point, I’m pounding my head on the door.
Finally he gets the door open. Princess is in a full meltdown and screaming at me. Temper tantrum level Omega, or Red or whatever ultimate level you have. Seriously.
So, she goes in time out for the remainder of the ride, and we get home and she gets sent to lay down on my bed as she screams at the top of her lungs and her brothers get to play.
Anyone want 3 ADORABLE kids? Really, they’re very cute.
I deserve a lot of ch0ocolate right now.
And note to self; find the story of “The Boy who Cried Wolf,” to teach a lesson.

My daughters asked if I was laughing about them, while I was reading this post. I was happy to tell them – “No, was laughing at some OTHER naughty kids.” 🙂
Thank you…it's not just me. Actually, this sounds like a really horrible day…but somehow we moms are supposed to be prepared for it.
How do you do time out in the car?
At least you got a Dr. Pepper out of it all 🙂
Lol
…and people wonder why I'm in no rush to potty train Johnny!
HA! This reminds me of our snow cone story I wrote about a few weeks back.
Hayden regularly locks me out of the house when I go to get the mail…I've learned to carry extra keys, haha.
Bless your heart! I'm sorry – I can't stop laughing! I can so relate to the utter craziness! Just this afternoon my 15 month stuck the pvc pipe in our track of the glass sliding door (which we put there as extra measure of secruity), I took it out to go hand laundary outside, couldn't get the door opened & all 3 kids were inside by themselves! After banging on the door my 5 year old moved the pipe but not before the baby took out a chuck of skin in her finger when I tried to open the door not realizing the pipe was there, it opened just enough for her to smash her finger & for me to scream for my 5 year old – thank God my husband didn't cut the pvc pipe to exact size! Anyways, hugs – you are not alone! 🙂
Sigh… all I can say is that “We've all been there” and I am so glad to hear that it's not just me 🙂
Plus “they” say these are the stories that will make us laugh someday… supposedly 😉OMG, I can see why you were ready to sell them to the highest nearest bidder. We call such moments here “UPS moments” – that's when we get an urge to calculate how much it would be to ship her off somewhere to Siberia, or at least to grandma in NJ. I did have to laugh a bit too – I can just imagine watching this from the side 🙂
Wow that sounds like lots of fun! Okay, not really, but I know we all have those moments with our kids. Well my kids haven't locked me out anywhere yet but they have done more than their fair share of screaming. Its good that you wrote it down though, that way your children won't have the idea that they were perfect angels when they get older. I have made sure to scrapbook some not so good moments so she doesn't just see all the good moments and get some skewed idea of how she really was.
It's not just me? 😀 YAY!
Oh, Ticia, big hugs to you!! I recommend massive amounts of chocolate ice cream (for you, not the kiddos!)
I'm sorry I know I shouldn't be but I was just laughing out loud there….gotta love thoe days hey – NOT hehehe
I just want to know when I'm going to get any advance warning in this department. I've actually resorted to keeping a potty cup in the car (thank goodness I have a boy) because Tornado Boy always has to go NOW!
Glad to know I am not the only one!! 🙂
Oh, you definitely deserve some chocolate! That sounds like one of those extremely trying afternoons. But along with those hard times, come the super sweet times. I know you have had plenty of both. 🙂
Oh no. I hate it when things like that happen. It can be so frustrating. I would give you a big hug if I could!
I hope you got some chocolate.
Hysterical!!! Trust me…..I've been there and I have a secret chocolate stash for days like that =)
How old are your kids? The sidebar says 3 year old twins and one younger, but this post leaves me hoping they are much older?
