Craft Wars with Kids

August 30, 2012 Ticia 6 Comments

kid made doll house furnitureThe kids and I have been obsessively watching Craft Wars this summer.  They love to see  what the contestants are going to make with the challenge materials, and they will tell the contestants what they’re doing wrong.

It’s so much fun to hear the kids say, “No, don’t use that!  The judges hate hot glue, they’re going to yell at you.”

It’s inspired a lot of crafting, and the desire to do more.  So one day we had our own “Craft War!”

The challenge: Take these ordinary recyclables and design a room for your dollhouse.  There must be at least two items in your room, and it can be for any room in the house.

And they headed off.

Using a hot glue gun, despite the warning they kept shouting to the contestants.  As a reminder, here are our hot glue gun rules.

At the end of 15 minutes they all felt they had their rooms properly decorated.

Princess had created a thoroughly decorated room.  But most of her materials were just cut into confetti, the rug and wall paper are from her first dollhouse decoration.

boys can decorate dollhouses too

Batman made a wonderful bunk bed, complete with pillows and blanket.

Superman also made a bedroom, with a blanket and pillow.  I’m going to be completely honest and tell you I might have gotten my boys backwards, I can’t remember for sure who did which.

Do your kids get inspired by TV shows to do something beyond watch it?

We don’t really have TV any more and I can truthfully say we don’t miss it at all. This activity looks like great fun. Yes, I do tend to do too much for my little ones when they can do it for themselves! Nice reminder.

I’ve toyed with getting rid of our TV from time to time, but I really enjoy shows like this.

It’s so hard to find that line of letting them do for themselves and pushing them to do too much, or it is for me.

This is amazing, especially that your boys can use a sewing machine! We also don’t watch a lot of TV with Anna – perhaps it’s time for cooking shows 🙂

With much patience on my part they can. I’m really having to hold back on saying “No, let me do it.”

I feel like every day is Craft Wars day in my house – and we’ve never even seen the show!

    I love that bunkbed.

I do too, I think it’s adorable. I would of course not use those words to him, but it’s adorable 🙂
