Every now and then I like to put together a truly over-the-top Bible craft. It’s not something you’ll do in every single Bible lesson, but it can be fun for an every now and then project. That’s certainly the case with this Creation mural craft. It’s fun and messy, and a great way to really focus on the first Bible story.

What you need for Creation of mural craft

easel paper, poster paint (that took surprisingly long to find a good set of colors for this), paint brushes, Creation Story Unit (to get all the animal pictures and the printable step-by-step instructions)

Let’s make a Creation mural craft!

I made my Creation story mural about 10 feet long, also known as the length of my dining room table, but obviously, this is rather variable.

Start by drizzling paint all over the mural area. You’ll then blur the paint together to create the background. This is why I linked to that cheap paintbrush set because the foam brushes work really well for this, and then eventually I ended up using my fingers for this. So if you’re not against a giant mess, kids could have a blast creating this with finger painting.

You can see the two parts of the process. Of course, your background won’t look exactly like mine because it truly is dependent on the proportions of paint you add, and you can add more if you don’t like the colors you’re getting. That does mean your paint will take longer to dry as you have giant piles of paint.

While the paint is drying cut out the pictures. If you don’t want to use mine, you could easily use pictures from magazines or whatever you can find. I chose to fussy cut them, and didn’t do a close job of cutting out the pictures.

Then start gluing your pictures on. There are some definite problems with size comparisons. The lizard is the same size as the live oak tree, which obviously isn’t true, but it’s a representation and most kids won’t really care.

While, I’ve just told you more or less step by step how to make this Creation mural, and you don’t have to buy the bundle to make this, there are about a dozen more ideas step by step in the Creation Unit bundle, including newly revised artwork for the Creation Story lesson with the much-requested black and white version for kids to color in themselves. So head on over and pick up your copy now.

Turning this from a craft into a Bible lesson

Honestly, this is a great opportunity to talk with your kids (students) about God’s creation. Ask them what their favorite animal of all the animals available is. Talk to them and find out if they’ve ever seen that type of flower or that bird.

Ask them which animal God had the most fun creating.

I always have fun imagining the glee God had as he made some of the weirder animals. Seriously, there is a woodpecker whose tongue goes through his head and splits around his head in this weird spiral pattern.

That is just cool.

Of course, you could just have fun making a cool art project, just like God was probably having a blast creating the world during those 6 days.
