Czechia Unit geography Europe 8th

Czechia Unit

I thoroughly enjoyed frustrating my daughter mispronouncing Czechia, or what was once known as the Czech Republic. That and we may have spent way more time than anyone else might have making jokes about defenestration. Yes, sometimes our geography lessons are very weird.

After the two countries without Geography Now videos, I’m so glad to get back to having one, even if it’s an earlier episode before he included quite so much information. It’s still a fun video to watch and helped us get a good idea of the country.

Czechia recipe: Beef Goulash

We tried this beef goulash recipe.

Czech Beef Goulash

Hmmm…. so, I had this one week where we made a whole bunch of recipes and went through tons of geography, and then I didn’t put the pictures into the right places right away, and I’m looking at the picture I thought was for Czechia, and I’m almost 100% sure this is not the correct picture, it looks wrong. I’m going to have to remake this.

Which I don’t really mind because it’s a great recipe, that I highly recommend.

I have now remade the goulash, and it was still delicious. I’ve actually made it a couple of times.

Czech Beef goulash

  • 1.5 pounds stew meat (I actually bought around 2-3 pounds for all my giant teens)
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 large onion diced
  • 1/2 green bell pepper coarsely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons paprika (you should have heard The Artist complain at this)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup water (I substituted broth)
  1. Heat oil in heavy skillet, I used a dutch oven. Then add the onion and sautee it.
  2. Add the paprika and blend it well with the onion/oil. Add the water, beef, and green bell pepper (though I added the bell pepper when I added the onion).
  3. Cover and simmer for 1.5-2 hours.
  4. We served it with buttered egg noodles.

Our experience was you needed about another half cup of liquid because it simmered off too much, so I’d add more water, and I liked using broth because it adds a bit more flavor.

Czechia Unit for geography lessons

I knew Czechia was somewhere near the Germany area, since it started the Thirty Years War, which was essentially a civil war within the Holy Roman Empire that pulled the rest of Europe into it.

But, I hadn’t known the Narnia movies were filmed there.

Nor did I know there were so many wild mushrooms there. Wild mushrooms amuse me because it’s so weird to be like, “I’m going to try this food that will either be delicious or make me hallucinate for the next day.”

  1. Dear Ticia

Both names are valid, the Czech Republic is the formal name, Czechia is the short one.
Same as the French Republic and France or the Slovak Republic and Slovakia.

  2. Ha about wild mushrooms! I used to be an expert in them knowing exactly which ones are edible and which ones not to touch. It’s interesting to see how many countries of that general area have goulash recipes. My husband makes his goulash quite often but it is quite different and doesn’t has bell peppers or paprika in it. My favorite memory from Prague was original Pilsner beer 🙂
