Day of the Dead Craft for kids
Future Ticia here, a few years ago we “traveled” around the world with some fellow bloggers by Cooking Around the World. It was a lot of fun, and I found some amazing new recipes that we still cook to this day. Often times I felt I was doing good to make a recipe, but occasionally I was inspired by the country, as I was by Mexico. Living in Texas we learn a lot about Mexico from constant exposure to immigrants. One of the Mexican holidays celebrated here in Texas is Dia de Los Muertos, the Day of the Dead. When we first studied Mexico, my friend Sam had recently passed away and we created our own Day of the Dead memorial craft. It made for a great geography lesson.

Preparing for our Day of the Dead craft
When I have a better internet connection than I do at this hotel, I’ll find all of the recipes I’ve shared here with a Tex-Mex flair. Our usual go-to recipe for having people over is fajitas, but our local grocery store, HEB, makes a wonderful fajita mix that we just have to pick up and grill. I make some guacamole and grind up some cheese and we’re all happy as clams. I’m slowly learning that I what I think of as Mexican food is really Tex-Mex, and it’s AWESOME SAUCE!
But, this post isn’t just about my love of fajitas, no…… It’s about my AWESOME DAY OF THE DEAD CRAFT!
The Day of the Dead, as many of us learned from Coco, is a day to celebrate those you knew who have died, so their memory lives on. Here in Texas you see Day of the Dead celebrations all over the place, and San Antonio, in particular, is decorated for it. When I was a kid I always found the Candy sugar skeletons and skulls creepy, but I understand the idea behind it a bit more. For our Day of the Dead craft, we decided to remember Uncle Sam who died a few years ago.
Supplies for our Day of the Dead craft
picture of the person you know who has died, scrapbook supplies, for ours we pulled pictures of things Uncle Sam liked, Star Wars stickers (I sometimes wonder what he would think of the new Star Wars movies) and Super Hero stickers, and colorful construction paper
Putting together our Day of the Dead craft
A word of caution here, I’m not going to give you instructions on how to put this together. That would totally defeat the purpose of THIS activity.
The goal of our Day of the Dead craft is to allow the kids to honor Uncle Sam in the way they chose. They were young enough when he died that they only have vague memories of him. They mainly remember Uncle Sam from the stories we tell about him.
They know Uncle Sam liked Star Wars A LOT! Uncle Sam loved jokes and to be silly with them, that’s one of the pictures I printed out, Uncle Sam sword fighting a two-year-old carrying a sword as big as he is. They know Uncle Sam like superheroes, and World of Warcraft.
Their Day of the Dead crafts reflects their knowledge of who Uncle Sam was.
They happily cut, glued, cut some more, and stickered their pictures to their hearts’ content after they were all done I took pictures of their projects.
Look at these cute faces, now as Future Ticia, I’m pretty sure, the far left is Superman, the middle is Batman, and the far right is obviously Princess. Superman has the picture of Uncle Sam sword fighting with him. Batman has the picture of Uncle Sam holding him as a baby, and Princess has a picture of the teddy bear they made for Aunt Tara after Uncle Sam died for her wedding anniversary that year. I may have cried a lot when we bought that teddy bear….
More geographical inspired fun

Can’t wait to see your recipe. Great craft and I’m sure it brought back nice memories. Thanks for doing this from the hotel and for your participation 🙂
Fingers crossed I can get it done soon. Recipe will probably go up towards the end of the month because I’m committed to writing a 10 day series for the next 2 weeks.
