New Testament letters lesson for elementary and preschool

Dig into the New Testament with fun lessons!

I don’t tend to do a lot of lessons for the New Testament letters lessons for kids in my Sunday School class because most kids are still concrete thinkers, but there are a few topics that kids relate to very well.  So, I’ve got those lessons built into my Family Bible Curriculum, and I’m working on adding in a few more lessons beyond the four lessons I have so far.

Quick Note on the New Testament Letters

As a general rule, you won’t be teaching most of the New Testament letters to younger kids. Their brains are just too concrete to truly understand and really dig into this material. That’s why most of my Bible lessons are in the history books, it’s hard to teach kids about abstract ideas when they aren’t thinking that way without turning the lesson into moralism (“Do this, don’t do this”).

Most of the lessons I’m sharing today are geared for upper elementary. It’s amazingly hard to create New Testament letters lessons for preschoolers, and I’m still working out how you do that without overly simplifying the lesson to the point of uselessness.

First, we start with the New Testament Letters lessons with Fruit of the Spirit

I split the fruit of the Spirit into two weeks.  There’s enough material on this topic you could easily make it into nine lessons, but to keep it relatively concise I split it into two weeks. I first made a Fruit of the Spirit mini-book.

Then a few years later I went in and created a second lesson using the same material and shared a Fruit of the Spirit craft.

From there we head over to the Armor of God lesson

To keep the family Bible curriculum in a two-year time frame I kept the Armor of God in a single week, but it could easily be split into two weeks or more, just like the Fruit of the Spirit. I have always imagined this would make a great lesson to create a paper doll, but I haven’t figured out how to create this in a way I like yet.

Emphasis on yet. I have images of it. So, that part of my lesson plan hasn’t been published yet.

Way back when the kids were little, I started them learning about the Armor of God with an Armor of God copywork lesson. It’s not my usual Bible lesson, but the New Testament letters lessons are not like most of my Bible lessons.

While Revelation is technically not in the New Testament letters lessons, it feels weird to spilt it off

weird and scary stuff in the Bible

Revelation is a tricky topic to cover with preschoolers, but upper-elementary kids absolutely love all of the imagery in the book.  I highly recommend reading through the Revelation lesson to make sure your kids are able to handle it.

A few years after I wrote my first Revelation lesson covering the entire book, our church was using Gospel Project, so I came up with another lesson to go with the letters in Revelation, so that is how I’m going to relate Revelation to the New Testament Letters lessons, with the Letters in Revelation lesson.

Finally, here are all of my random New Testament Letters lesson

These are all written to go with a lesson from the Gospel Project. I wanted to go deeper with the kids than the video lessons of the Gospel Project does.

Let’s start off this section of New Testament letters lessons with a lesson on 2 Thessalonians 2. It’s another look at end times, but it’s got a great lesson for upper elementary as you search through to look for mistranslations and talk about the importance of correctly translating God’s word.

Then comes the Body of Christ lesson. It’s a great look at how we can’t all be the person in front on the stage. I’m one of the people who can struggle with this idea from time to time as I look at different spiritual gifts and abilities, and I think, “I want to do that.”
