4 Easter movies to watch with your family
Each year Easter rolls around and we ask the same question, “What should we watch for Easter this year?” There are dozens of great Christmas movies to watch, both religious and heart-warming. Sadly there are not as many Easter movies. This means we end up watching the same movies every year over and over again. Thankfully we love these Easter movies and as our kids grow up we are able to watch a wider variety of movies with them and it can serve as a Bible lesson.

Easter movie to watch with your preschooler
VeggieTales first came out when I was in college. Since I went to a Christian college we all watched them to be ironic. It was not uncommon to see students wearing Bob the Tomato shirts or wandering around. I give you this background so you fully understand my love of classic VeggieTales, and why I was willing to watch the Easter Carol over and over again for the first several years of my children’s lives.
Yes, I bought the soundtrack, and Hope’s Song shows up in my playlist from time to time to this day. It’s a great song. And yes, I do get teased about it.
Easter movie to watch with your elementary kid
This is not specifically an Easter movie, but it’s one of the best ways I’ve seen to teach about Easter and Jesus’ ministry on earth. Actually, the kids and I pulled out Buck Denver Asks What’s in the Bible: Jesus is the Good News earlier this week to watch it. I still love how it presents the crucifixion.
I’ve got my fingers crossed he’ll do an Easter movie for What’s in the Bible like he did a Christmas What’s in the Bible, but by the time it’s made my kids are going to be a little old for it.
Easter movie to watch with your middle school kid
A few years ago Risen came out to theaters, and my husband and I saw it opening weekend. A week later we took our kids to see the movie. Admittedly our kids were still in elementary school when we did this, so it’s really going to depend on your kid for when they can handle it. I LOVE this movie. I’ll happily watch it year-round, and it’s one of the best depictions of the time period I’ve seen. Actually, I was in an archeological talk recently, and they referenced details included in the movie, which made me happy.
Easter movie to watch with your high schooler
The Passion of the Christ came out around when the boys were born, so this is an older movie, and I’ll be honest this is not a movie you watch every year. It’s hard to watch because it is so violent, and you know your kids best as to whether or not they can handle it. I close my eyes and plug my ears during parts of it.
With that being said, I will have my sensitive daughter watch it once before she leaves our house. I want her to understand the full enormity of what Jesus did on the cross. She’ll be able to close her eyes and plug her ears just like I do, but it’s all too easy with the distance of 2000 years to make light of Jesus’ sacrifice, and I don’t want to do that.
Do you have any favorite Easter movies you watch? What should I add to this list?
I will confess I did think about including some Passover movies because those were staples for so long, and there were a few more not as specific to Easter I thought about, but I was worried about broadening the scope of the post too much.

These are good picks! We will watch the film version of Jesus Christ Superstar this year.
