Genesis: Jacob and Esau

April 11, 2013 Ticia 9 Comments

I had to wait to write about Jacob and Esau because the kids wanted to act it out.  The boys were very excited because Jacob and Esau are twins just like them.  Though Jacob and Esau don’t get along as well as my boys do.  Besides it makes for great pictures for our Sunday School lesson.

Jacob and Esau activities

We started off with reading the story in our storybook (printable for Jacob and Esau storybook at bottom of post).  Then, we got to act like Isaac and pretend we were blind (who we last saw in Isaac and Rebekah get married).

The kids all had a lot of fun reaching into the bag and finding the various items I told them to find.  Well, two of them did.  The third was in trouble for something at the time and had to sit in time out.  We’ve been having a lot of testing going on in their behavior recently.

From there we acted out Jacob and Esau, the kids had a blast with this.  Batman was a real ham, and really played up Esau, while Superman was amusing as Jacob.  Princess played Rebekah.

Jeff took the pictures of our Jacob and Esau skit, and we obviously need to work on the kids learning to face the audience because they spent most of their time with their backs to the audience.  I loved having the kids whisper to me what I should have been saying, it was so cute to hear, and warmed my heart.

That morning they had worked on a few printables I’d found online (why recreate what’s already there?).  They did a word search and put the events of the story in order.  My boys have recently decided they think word searches are lots of fun, and are completing them whenever they get one very quickly.  I like it because word searches help you with several reading skills whose names are alluding me right now. {link to where I found the printables is in the storybook}

      It was a blast, the kids have been begging to do this for a long time, it just took me a while to get the beard and arm coverings done.

      My husband was not so amused to discover it was his shirts turned inside out being used for their tunics. The kids thought it was AWESOME!

    […] I like rogue and trickster characters, though Jacob’s are a bit cruel in his youth, I do appreciate his finally meeting his match in his father-in-law.  I’ve always enjoyed the story “Jacob finds a wife.”  Especially after the story of Jacob and Esau. […]
