How to make homemade pizza with kids

It’s CHEESE Grommit!  Cheese! Did you know Wisconsin makes cheese?  My kids are very aware of this and somewhat obsessed with cheese, so as one of our final activities for Wisconsin geography lesson we made a pizza. When we originally made our homemade pizza dough recipe, we used the recipe from the back of the book we read, but today I’m going to share our homemade pizza dough recipe. All in all, this is a huge hit as a geography lesson.

The book we read (and got our original homemade pizza recipe from)

Extra Cheese, Please! goes through step by step how the milk goes from being milk to cheese, and even includes some fun scientific facts (which is going to be a science experiment soon enough).

At the back of the book is a recipe for making your own homemade pizza.  The kids were very excited about this, and they were also excited they had friends coming to spend the night, so we made this for our friends.

My recipe for making homemade pizza dough

Homemade pizza dough

  2. Add the water and oil together and mix well.
  3. Knead until smooth.
  4. Put in bowl covered in oil and let rise for 1-2 hours.
  5. Roll out and cover with toppings.
  6. Bake at 450 for 10-12 minutes.

Here’s what happened when we first made our homemade pizza

rolling out the homemade pizza dough

Superman was quite kind enough to roll out our homemade pizza dough for me.  I finished it off.  I never quite figured out how to roll it quite circular or rectangular (as you can see, 8 years later I’m still working on that, of course, I’m only recently trying this idea again).  I also had it crust up a little while it was rising, so I have a few kinks to work out (that is solved by covering the bread as its rising with cling wrap. We doubled the recipe in the back of the book and ended up with enough to make two meals for us. The first meal fed my family plus three more kids. The second meal was me, the kids, and Aunt Tara.

And look, you get to see a rare picture of me on the blog. It’s a rare Ticia sighting.

We have that book right now, too. Thanks for the tips on the recipe!

  3. I so understand not knowing how a lapbook will turn out- it's as much an adventure for the mom as it is for the kiddos!

  4. I am impressed that Superman could roll out Pizza. It required my husband's strength to roll out ours decently. It looks like you had a full house here – it's neat that your kids have such close friends.

That book looks great! Emma is now obsessed with making pizza, we made two last night and she rolled one of them out all by herself!

Yummm!! Looks like great educational fun! We love making homemade pizza, and what a great way to learn about the state of Wisconsin and all its cheese. I did a double-take when I saw the photo of you on this post!

I have been meaning to make a homemade pizza with the boys forever. Sigh, maybe someday. It looks like you guys had fun and fed a ton of people. 🙂

  8. Hooray for a Ticia sighting! I love the aroma that comes from a home made pizza cooking away – yummo.

I look forward to seeing your lapbook. I think half the fun is making it up as you go. Sometimes I have an idea and am not exactly sure how to execute it, then bit by bit it comes together. I hope your lap book ideas fall easily into place for you.

You guys had so much fun making your leprachaun traps. It was neat how you encouraged your children to think about the process and justify their decisions. I loved reading about their reasoning and their ideas.

  9. Oh, we LOVE WAllace and Grommit! And cheese.

  10. I keep saying I need to make homemade pizza, I wonder if Selena would eat it though. She doesn't like pizza. Silly child! Great study on Wisconsin!

  11. Thanks for your comment on my France post. My son was very happy that you liked his painting! We're doing US geography next year, so I'll have to come back to your post when we go over Wisconsin–looks fun!
