Make your GHC California trip great:
Book your hotel EARLY, we didn’t book ours until the very last minute and we ended up staying in 2 different hotels and far away from the convention center. The hotels WILL book up around California homeschool convention, don’t miss your chance to be where the action is. Convention dates are June 12-14.
As soon as you get there plan the booths you want to go to. I didn’t do this as effectively as I wanted to, and missed some great science booths there. I found it most effective to go through a grid pattern, and cross off rows at a time. Even skipping several sessions I did not see it all, it’s just not possible. Okay, it is if that’s ALL you do, and that is what some people go to conventions for. Here’s my big takeaway from the vendor hall:
- Buy your necessities first. I didn’t buy anything else until I’d bought my math, science and history.
- Compare prices, there are several different booths selling the same product, find the best price.
- Attend the workshop of the vendor you’re looking at, they’ll probably give you more information to use.
- Mark off where you’ve been so you don’t keep going back to the same places. I had to do that otherwise I got lost.
- Don’t buy your textbooks at the beginning of the day, I had a very sore back by the end of the day on Saturday.
- Visit the smaller vendors, you can find some real gems there, and that’s the writing and grammar I picked up, they’re awesome.
Pick the sessions you must go to. I budgeted some money to buy the convention recordings, it’s a lot of money, but it’s worth it to me to be able to listen to the sessions over again and listen to sessions I couldn’t go to. BUT some sessions weren’t recorded. If you’re interested in that sessions GO TO IT, don’t miss out. I had one sessions I was interested in I missed because I knew I should go to a different one and sadly it wasn’t recorded. I regret that a little, but it was the right choice because it firmed up my decision to buy the writing program I bought, and I love our new writing curriculum.
Don’t forget to sign up for any extras you want. Everyone I talked to raved about the children’s track, and the comedy night are a lot of fun. The children’s track sold out in Ohio, so register for that NOW if you want it.. As a side note I kinda wanted to go to some of the teen track sessions because they just looked so good, if you’ve got teens I highly encourage them to go.
I’m still formulating my notes from the Ohio convention into a readable format and thinking through them. Also, one of my sessions was on the writing curriculum we’re using, and so I need to use it some more before I write about that, but I seriously am in love with our writing program now. Okay, all the stuff I bought there.
I would actually love to go to a homeschool convention, but don’t think I’ll make it to this one.
