Good Omens book club
We broke our rule with Good Omens. It came out when we were up in Iowa visiting Tara and she LOVES Terry Pratchett, grew up reading them with her Mom, and so of course we watched it with her. Then we returned home and during our speculative fiction year of reading we had our Good Omens book club. It was a great book and a movie, and while it may be on my 12th-grade books made into movies, we read it in 9th grade.

Good Omens Book Club Discussion Questions
I have to admit a lot of our discussion is about how this is an inversion and mock-up of the Bible and prophetic books work.
It’s clear both Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman are familiar with the Bible. That is part of why the book works, they know the material and while they don’t believe it, there is a base level of respect for the material.

It’s much why Life Of Brian works also. Though I’ll admit there are more than a few Christians who d
So our Good Omens discussion was very low-key. Talking about what we expected and what was different from the show which we’d already seen.
- Dana’s book club questions– the first few questions are rather meh, but it gets better as it goes down
- More light-hearted silly questions
- Never Stop Reading’s questions– again the first few questions are a little light
Good Omens book club snacks
We watched the Good Omens “TV show” and had a giant pile of snacks, more than I really bothered to have room for on my photo collage.

- witch’s hat- round cookie (previously I’ve used Nilla Wafers, but the picture doesn’t look like that) and a Hershey Kiss on top with a bit of frosting to hold it there (though I think a chocolate cookie would have more the right color)
- prophecies- these were random drinks put into cool containers to drink
- The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, witch- much like in other books these are Hershey Nuggets with cardstock bit for binding and the lorum ipsum paper on top
- angel food cake- obviously angel food cake
- witchfinder- in the book it’s essentially a toothpick, so we grabbed some pretzel sticks
- Dog- shortbread dog cookies
- devil’s food cake– also rather obviously
- Famine- no food, come on, that’s funny
- War- peeps, why did I choose peeps, the kids probably had some crazy reason for it, maybe because we do peep duels in the microwave
- Death- jelly beans, why jelly beans?
- plants– because Crowley would threaten plants
- crepes- now I’m trying to remember what brought about including crepes, we added some Nutella and peanut butter to add some protein

More great 9th-grade learning fun
Let’s see, what all do I have squirreled away?
- Bolivia Unit
- Animal Farm book club
- Wordsmith Craftsman
- Six the Musical, history versus Broadway
- Titian Art History lesson

I am dying to know in more details what you and your kids thought of Good Omens! I often wonder how these kind of stories (also, for example, Lucifer) work (or don’t work) for people who actually believe in the Bible. Unfortunately, I have nobody to discuss it here since, unlikely though it might sound, almost none of our friends or neighbors are religious and those who are religious are not Christian.
