Each month I take one of the kids out for a “special thing,” usually to go get a drink, or for a special occasion I’ll take them to a movie. A few years ago I took Superman to go see the Goosebumps movie. This is a big deal because he’d never read any of the books and our book and a movie rule is you have to read the book first. He loved it and couldn’t wait to show it to his siblings. I told him they would have to read at least one of the books first.
When Goosebumps came out on DVD*, I checked out a large supply of the books and said, “you have three weeks, read as many of these books as you can and then we’ll brainstorm snacks.” Superman enthusiastically set forth to read them, the other two slightly less enthusiastically did so.

Goosebumps book series
I remember the Goosebumps books* as the slightly less scary version of “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” that came out in the late 80s and early 90s. They weren’t a book style I was interested in, and since I was prone to nightmares anyways, I didn’t read them. Having now seen the movie and at least read one of the books, I’d say they’re a little bit scary, but if your child likes being somewhat scared this is the perfect book series for them.
Goosebumps movie night snacks
We had so much fun with our Goosebumps movie night snacks. With all of the unique characters in the books and movie there are lots of ideas for fun snacks.
This is also one of the few movies recently we didn’t have a meal with it. I don’t know what happened there….. It’s also back before I started making cool labels for the snacks.

Bear traps- gummy bears*
Carnivorous plants- gummy worms*, these were the glow kind, because that’s yummy
fire coral- twizzler bites*
books- Hershey nuggets similar to what we did for the Worst Christmas Pageant Ever

Doors- fig newtons*, there’s a lot of door slamming in the movie as they try to keep terrible things away
Garden gnomes- EL Fudge cookies*, the kids had quite a lot of fun destroying these….
Floating dogs- I’m sure they’re based on a book, but my kids got a big kick out of the floating dog in the movie so we had some shortbread dog cookies*
Random other snacks for our Goosebumps movie night
I had three snacks left that didn’t fit the other categories, so here they are:
ice flow or ooze- I don’t remember which, but we used blue jello*
spider webs- using string cheese whips from up in Wisconsin, normal string cheese would kind of work…..
ooze- I’m not sure what this is. That’s the problem with writing this more than a year after reading the book/movie. It looks like pumpkin filling for a pie. WAIT! I think it’s butterscotch pudding*, that sounds right to me.
This movie was a BIG hit and we’ve made it into a Halloween tradition after we finish trick or treating watching this or a couple of other mildly scary movies.
