Halloween Middle School Unit freebies

Middle School Halloween mini unit

I remember fondly coming in for the random school holiday and being excited about what special lessons my teacher might have planned. Through elementary school and for part of middle school my teachers didn’t disappoint. I want to bring that same level of excitement for my kids in their homeschool holidays. Last year I did part of this mini Halloween middle school unit, and this year I’ve found more resources for a Halloween middle school unit. And since I’m planning ahead for Halloween, rather than frantically searching at 7 AM the morning of, I can share my Halloween unit with you.

Just as an FYI, there are a lot more great ideas, but since we’re homeschoolers and not likely to repeat the lessons I focused on free ideas. If you want some elementary Halloween ideas, check out Halloween math activities.

Middle School Halloween Math

Last year I did this Halloween Zombie math with the kids and taped up the problems all over the house in different areas. If you have the answers correct you should eventually answer all of the questions. The kids had a blast with it and despite it having a few things we hadn’t specifically covered yet (they’re covering it this year) they loved it.

This year, I plan to print out the Halloween Logic Puzzles for some morning work as I finish setting up the rest of my plans……

Then we’ll have some fun middle-school Halloween writing

I’m heading to Barnes and Noble this weekend to buy some Spooky Mad Libs* (part of my sales will support some local museums)

Last year I printed off this Spooky Story writing, but we never got it done. I loved the dice for the story starter. This is a similar product of a Story Starter and Word Search (my kids hate word searches). There’s also a writing prompt and stationary, which I loved as a teacher, but now that I pay for the ink I’m not as excited by the ink needed for them.

If you want to get a head start try some fun Halloween themed books

These are all elementary grade reading level (well Black Cauldron is technically 6th grade I think), but they’re all somewhat Halloween themed to me.

Bunnicula is also, but that movie is so atrocious I have a hard time recommending it.

You could also try this Tell-Tale Heart unit(I remember reading Tell-Tale Heart in 6th grade and being scared by it).

And just a little bit of Halloween Science and History

I had intended last year to go on this Halloween Nature walk, and there are a few fun trails by my house to go on. But what I’m really excited about are these Halloween STEM ideas, especially the candy pumpkin launch (I had friends in college who did the trebuchet pumpkin competition).

I found this Halloween Traditions and Urban Legends mini unit, that could be fun. It’s based on two Youtube videos, so I’ll have to preview them first.

If you have younger kids I would highly recommend my Homeschool Halloween post, it covers all of the craft and other project we did when the kids were little.

Do you have any plans for a special Halloween unit?

  1. Oh Ticia, it made me scared. I loved your list of books.

    1. YAY! I’m a sucker for a slightly scary and somewhat funny book/movie.

  2. Great ideas! I did a Halloween Logic Puzzle with my math club last year, and it was tons of fun. Too bad that we are skipping pre-Halloween math club because of Teacher-in-Service day…

  3. Great list! Thanks. Also this cracked me up, “which I loved as a teacher, but now that I pay for the ink I’m not as excited by the ink needed for them.” So true!!

    1. Seriously, it’s amazing how your standards of what you want in a paper change once you pay for the ink.
