Homeschooling Happenings July 2017

I SURVIVED JULY! That’s how this summer feels to me. I had big plans for some funschooling (what we call our summer homeschooling), but it just didn’t happen. Here’s what did happen.

July week 1

July started off with the end of Kids Clubs with our church, and Aunt Tara visiting from Iowa.

This of course meant lots of games played (mainly Shadows of Brimstone*), a fun murder mystery dinner (Pasta, Passions, and Pistols*), and lots of movies watched.

Saturday morning we loaded Princess up in the car with Aunt Tara and Uncle Josh, and she headed up to visit them for a few days.

 

July Week 2

Started off getting Superman new closed toed shoes, also known as “giant boots” and the discovery that my boys’ feet are bigger than mine. They are regularly coming up to stand next to me and measure themselves, “I’m almost as tall as you Mommy.” Yeah, that’s happening really soon.

We dropped the boys off at camp, and Jeff and I enjoyed a few days of kid-free time. Then Thursday morning I drove up to Witchita, Kansas to get Princess back, had a blast together, and then drove all the way back down to Austin, only to throw a load of laundry into the washer, and then turn around at 7:00 the next morning and load up to drive off to the Navajo Reservation (which I think those pictures ended up on the next week).

 

July Week 3

We drove forEVER and got to the reservation Sunday afternoon. The kids love getting there because the roads are all dirt, and you’re bouncing up and down like crazy as the vans careen down roads that vaguely resemble a path.

We split up to our various different projects. The kids destroyed two sheds, painted a house, dug an outhouse hole and painted the outhouse, carefully taking them down so the materials could be re-used. The men put a metal roof on a building, poured concrete, and fixed a broken truck. Meanwhile the ladies deep-cleaned the church and re-organized the kitchen, and put together 232 Christmas presents for kids from preschool to high school.

It was seriously awesome, and because this year we didn’t have any really little kids, we were able to go see some seriously impressive stuff, and see Ship Rock, a place of great importance to the Navajo people.

Friday we loaded up in the cars and made the trip home. We got home Saturday afternoon and crashed.

 

July Week 4

This was a super stressful week for me. Tuesday was my birthday, and that was super fun, but it was immediately followed up by Jeff having minor surgery.

Of course before all of that we went to our first ever Brickfest, which was both fun and a bit of a letdown (though I got some fun mini-figures and a few Christmas presents).

Plus side, I got a bunch of my lesson-planning done while Jeff was in surgery, so our history is nominally planned out for the whole semester, I just need to go through and make up the notebooking pages for it.

Surgery was just fine, and he’s all recovered now, still a bit of pain every now and then, but fine overall.

Then Thursday I worked on some blog stuff on the technical side and that became a five day nightmare of trying to deal with my old hosting company and my new hosting company (who were amazing), and generally being super stressful (if you get my newsletter, you got to hear a bit more about this).

 

July Week 5/start of August

And then I broke my blog. If you tried to visit last week, you’ll notice it was down, for a full week. I was stressed beyond belief because I had plans to release my How to Study the Bible e-book this Monday, and I wasn’t sure if that was going to happen.

Thankfully my blog came back up on Sunday afternoon, so I hurriedly got it all put together, and that is the giveaway going on right now.

I did take a brief break to play our skeleton game, and then we headed off to Zilker Park to see the Wizard of Oz musical.

Somewhere in here Jeff went out of town for a business trip. I am running days otgether, so I’m not sure exactly where that happened.

 

All told, I SURVIVED JULY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How was your month?
