How to make a Harry Potter wand with supplies in your house

December 19, 2016 Ticia 7 Comments

This year for her birthday my daughter opted for a Harry Potter themed birthday party.  We did quite a few different Harry Potter projects, but by far the simplest to put together was making our Harry Potter wands.

Supplies for your Harry Potter wand

supplies needed to make a Harry Potter wand

  • aluminum foil* (if you are doing this for a Harry Potter birthday party like I was, you might consider getting pre-cut aluminum foil sheets*, I picked some up at the dollar store)
  • dowel rods* (you could also use chopsticks if you’re like me and have a stash of them already)
  • beads*
  • acrylic paint*
  • glitter* (if you feel brave, for a party of 10 hyper tween girls I opted to leave out the glitter)
  • spray adhesive* (I used the 505 spray temporary adhesive* I use when sewing, I love it for applique projects or very small pieces)

How to make your Harry Potter wand

Harry Potter wand step 1

1.  Spray your aluminum foil sheet with your spray adhesive.  Then sprinkle beads throughout (this is your magical component if you’re feeling fancy provide labels for your beads)

2. Now lay your dowel rod down on the aluminum foil and start rolling it up.  Make sure all of the dowel rod is covered by the aluminum foil.  As you roll up the foil you’ll get wrinkles.  You want that, it adds to the character of your wand.

3.  Smash down the aluminum foil until it is good and tight, then carefully paint your wand with the acrylic paint.  You don’t have to get into all the nooks and crannies, that again adds to the character of your wand if there are bits that aren’t painted.  If you feel like a  challenge choose two different colors to paint your wand to give it more of a realistic color, no piece of wood is all one color.  For the ginormous party of girls, I had brown, black, and gray available.

4.  While the paint is still wet you can sprinkle some glitter on the end of the want to give it the appearance of sparking.

Wait for your wand to dry, and you are good to play with your fun new wand.  Or as at my house throwing stuff at your sibling and waving your wizard wand around shouting pseudo-latin phrases.

That wand is amazing! Definitely a craft idea for the holidays. My daughter wants to make Christmas cards with her favorite pets from Neopia . Each card takes her a considerable amount of time. I think she’ll love the wand. She and her friends love the Harry Potter world too. Perhaps she could make some wands for her friends. They are less time consuming. Thanks for the grand idea!
