January 2016 homeschooling
It’s the end of the month and time for a homeschooling report. So, what have we been up to?

Sick
Or that’s what it’s felt like. The first week Jeff was off of work, so we were continuing our games marathon. The two we’ve played so far, Shadows of Brimstone*, and Favor of The Pharaoh* both got played a couple of more times.
But, before Superman fell sick with his epic sickness of pneumonia, we got the kids a little more moved in to their new room, and it’s looking a quite a bit neater, if cluttered. We’re still working on the getting rid of stuff and organizing, but that has been thrown off by the pneumonia.
And for everyone who’s asked, Superman is feeling better-ish, but everyone I talked to says pneumonia is a slow recovery process with lots of setbacks, and that’s what we saw this week. He was listless on Sunday, had energy enough on Monday to go to Trail Life, but was wiped out on Tuesday so he just listened to lessons… It’s been a very up and down week.
In between cuddling a sick boy, I sewed a ball gown for the “Old South” ball I’m going to tomorrow. I made a swiss waist (which is what a visible corset is called), a chemise, and a skirt for the ball. I also learned how to make a Civil War era hair pieces. As of when I’m typing this, I haven’t quite finished the skirt. I’m figuring out how to make a chevron panel for the last panel because I was a bit short on fabric and don’t want to skimp on the fullness with the hoop skirt. If you’re following me on instagram, then you’ve seen a few shots of it in progress from time to time.
But did we accomplish much with school?
Not really. We spent a lot of time at doctor’s offices this month. Superman had 3 appointments in 2 weeks. Batman had 3 specialists appointments (physical therapy and dermatologist to remove a planter’s wart), Princess had a tooth removed (her grown up tooth was growing in where her baby tooth still was), and I suddenly broke out in hives and had to get that taken care of. For our family that usually only goes to the doctor for well check visits, it’s been difficult. I have a whole new level of respect for those of you homeschooling with sick kiddos or chronic illness.
We did manage to study the Philippines.
We also learned about birds, which allowed us to repeat some of the activities we did back in first grade, which made the kids very happy.
We learned about Hawaii.
And for The Mystery of History 3* we learned about Bloody Mary, Queen Elizabeth, and Copernicus. It was a bit crazy.
What was popular this month on the blog?
As always, tips on teaching distractible kids is hugely popular. Dismissing that, my top 3 were a surprise for not having been there before:
- Temptation of Jesus activity
- Jesus changes water to wine craft
- Bible curriculum (I don’t know this has been in the top 10 before)
What interested me this month on the internet
I have very wide-ranging interests, so this month is a little eclectic in what I pulled out, though I did limit the sewing links to only 1.
- Pro Blogger Podcast: How I made $500,000 on Amazon (I’m going to re-listen to this, because it had some great suggestions of things to try)
- This amazing petticoat– I was fascinated with how she put it together (there’s a part of me that wants to write a post on my outfit for the ball, but I know most of you aren’t interested)
- Bible Reading Plans for slackers– The title alone amused me.

We are still praying for Superman’s health. Looks like some fun was had and accomplishment made despite all the difficulties. I have one of those very busy appointment filled weeks coming up next week.
This month has given me a whole new respect for parents dealing with health issues of all sorts.
I am so sorry that Superman is still struggling to recover. I am amazed that you whipped up this pretty costume amidst this all. Hoping for more health for all of you in February!
It was my mental health check, that and a serious deadline of today forced me to get it done.
Wow! I’m sorry to read about all the illness you’ve been dealing with. Hopefully you’re all on the way to recovery. What a fantastic sewing project – I’m in awe of your skill. My nemesis, the sewing machine, is locked safely away in a closet – but it’s nice to know someone who has a working relationship with their machine 🙂
I’m always in awe of your crocheting skills, I know it’s a matter of time and practice to get to your level, but my projects always turn into blobby shapes, and I think “I could sew this in half the time.”
Pneumonia is horrible, so I am pleased he is beginning a slow journey to full recovery. I’m sorry your family has had so much sickness and I will be praying that February is a month full of wellness for you all 🙂
I’m praying for that as well, it’s not off to a great start with Princess getting sick now.
I will pray your guy gets all well soon. Pneumonia can knock you flat for quite some time. (No wonder you’ve had a hard month.) I love how you say you just whipped up a ball gown! — like it was soooo easy 😉
Ha ha ha ha, I guess it does sound kind of like that. I think sewing is my therapy and it keeps me sane.
Hoping for a speedy recovery for you all.. pretty sure this is my first time reading your blog. I stumbled upon it through Collage Friday.
Glad to have you here!
I would love to read more about your dress!
I would love to read more about your dress!
Maybe I’ll add it as an addendum to one of my upcoming posts. I don’t know how many in-process pictures I have of the dress.
I sure hope he is on the upswing by the time I write this…praying…also your sewing skills ROCK! Enjoy the weekend!
He FINALLY is. It took forever, but he is.
Thank you! It was a lot of fun to wear it to the ball.
