Joshua and the Battle of Jericho activities

October 4, 2013 Ticia 16 Comments

Joshua and the Battle of Jericho is a Sunday School lesson everyone teaches at least once.  Triumph against overwhelming odds, good over evil, mercy for a pretty girl.  It’s all good fun.  Last we saw the Israelites they had sent 12 spies into Canaan and then decided it was too scary.  This week they’ve learned from their 40 year time-out.

Whenever I start to talk about the Joshua and the Battle of Jericho I immediately start thinking of the song:

So, if I’m completely honest while we are acting out the story and doing all of the activities, I had that song running through my head, and it’s still going through it right now.

What does Joshua and the Battle of Jericho mean to me?

When I write the stories and put the questions together I try my very best NOT to put my personal feelings and viewpoints in them, but at the same time I want to share what God has taught me and how it’s changing me.  So, you get my thought here.  I can’t help but think as I read the story of Joshua and the Battle of Jericho of how hard it can be at times to trust God.  I’m sure the Israelites heard God’s plan and said, “You’re nuts Joshua.  You want us to win the battle by walking?”  But the entire point of this story is to understand they are not going to win the battle.  It’s God’s battle to win.  If you ever get a chance to see VeggieTales: JOSH AND THE BIG WALL {affiliate link}, it does a great job of teaching everything I’m thinking to young kids, and has some more catchy songs to get stuck in your head.

The first part of the story involves two spies going into Jericho and meeting Rahab.  The last week we’d played hide the spies where I’d hidden them in plain sight for the kids to spy them that way, this time I hid the spies inside the building.  If I could have figured it out, I would have taped the spies to the tops of the cans so they couldn’t be found to illustrate how God supernaturally protected the spies, but I didn’t think of it in time.

The kids really enjoyed this and wanted to do it again, but I wanted to save their excitement for that activity for another time we might do it.

Joshua and the Battle of Jericho small world

Next, I’m sure you will be shocked to learn we recreated Jericho and talked through everything that happened, and then acted it out.

act out Joshua and the Battle of Jericho

And then we acted it out.  There was a great deal of discussion on just how big Rahab’s house should be.  Princess wanted it HUGE and with lots of girls in it, and the boys wanted lots of men in it.  We compromised with 2 of each gender.

I always enjoyed that particular Bible story. You are right in saying that it was God’s battle to win. Great activities to go with it too.

Thanks! It’s funny we started going through the next lesson, and it always amazes me because the very next chapter they forget all of that.
