Kangaroo booklist

This Kangaroo booklist came about because I was looking at an old post and thought, I never actually wrote down my list I used when we did our kangaroo unit. At some point I might expand this into a whole unit, rather than the booklist it is, and tell everyone all we did when we studied kangaroos back in Kindergarten, but for now. It’s just a kangaroo booklist, or I could say it was part of our Land Animals Unit. It falls into all sorts of things.

Kangaroo unit spine: Katy No Pocket

If you’re using My Father’s World Kindergarten, their spine for this week is Katy No Pocket. An adorable book about a kangaroo with no pocket, and how sad she is until a kind man gives her a new pocket.

It’s adorable and a fun book to read with your kids, it actually inspired an entire craft of making a kangaroo pouch.

Kangaroo nonfiction books

If you’re learning all about kangaroos, then of course you need some good books to read with this. I just checked and I had a start to this list over on How far does a kangaroo jump.

  • A Kangaroo Joey Grows Up– I love this series of books, they give just enough information to keep younger kids interested but aren’t so light on information that you feel like it was a waste of reading.
  • A Kangaroo’s World– Sadly I think this particular book/series is out of print, but if you can find it, it’s an awesome resource for the general life of kangaroos.
  • It’s a Baby Kangaroo– Another sadly out-of-print book, but it’s a nice reading level for young kids, and a second grader could read it on their own, or a strong first-grade reader.
  • Baby Kangaroos– A not-out-of-print similar to It’s a Baby Kangaroo, I do like how this one uses diagrams and other soft skills that would be good for an early reader to learn.
  • Kangaroos Up Close– a nice solid late second-grade or early third-grade nonfiction book that is well-organized. It has more information than the previous books but is organized such that it is not intimidating.

These next books are technically nonfiction, but are not nonfiction information about kangaroos, but other.

  • The Duck and the Kangaroo– this is an illustrated poem of Edward Lear, if you don’t know, Edward Lear writes absurdist poetry. The illustrations match the absurdity of the poem.
  • Jump, Kangaroo, Jump– a fun story to teach fractions. I love Math Start books and get them every time I find them.
  • Too Many Kangaroo Things to Do!-Kangaroos to teach multiplication to kids, I wouldn’t have thought of it, but again the story does great getting kids involved.

Kangaroo Fiction books

There are loads of kangaroo books. I tended to stay away from the more obviously generic mass-market series. I also for the most part did not include stuffed animal books in this kangaroo booklist (I did include one). I included one or two of the “animals are just like humans” books because the title and illustrations just made me happy.

  • What do you do with a Kangaroo?– Mercer Mayer has some amazing picture books, and this one is no exception.
  • Does a kangaroo have a mother, too?– this doesn’t focus specifically on kangaroos but looks at how all sorts of animals have mothers too.
  • Heart in the Pocket– A sweet mother/child story about a mother’s love, a great bedtime story.
  • What Shall We Do Blue Kangaroo?– Apparently, this is part of a series of 8 books following Lily’s adventures with her blue kangaroo stuffie. It’s got a bit of a Calvin and Hobbes or Toy Story feel to it as Blue Kangaroo can act on his own, but no one sees him do it.
  • Zoozical– all the animals from the zoo are feeling bored and tired because the weather is bad, so they decide to put on a musical while the people aren’t looking. Adorable and cute.
  • Pouch!– An adorable story of a young kangaroo exploring and moving into the world, but coming back to his mom. Absolutely adorable and I highly recommend it.
  • Elmer and the Kangaroo– Elmer was the spine book for the Elephant unit, so this could make a fun callback to that unit.

More kindergarten ideas

A lot of our kindergarten ideas were either part of My Father’s World, or our geography lessons. So this is quite the odd assortment.
