Kazakhstan unit
All right, let’s talk about Kazakhstan. It’s part of that segment of countries jokingly called “The Stans.” It’s also not one we Americans know much about, and will point vaguely in the direction of Asia to locate it. It’s a great deal of why I work so hard to have geography lessons, so we have a better chance of knowing where things are. Let’s look at this Kazakhstan Unit a smaller unit in our Asia unit.

Kazakhstan Unit Resources
My library didn’t really have any books on Kazakhstan, so here are some great websites you can check out:
And because it’s in the middle of the alphabet, there is a Flag Friday video, which I always like to watch.
Kazakhstan unit recipe: Beshbarmak
It’s interesting to see how different countries make their different dishes, also what people add into an otherwise fairly common recipe. Kazakhstan recipe: Beshbarmark found on the National Foods blog. I really need to look and see what other recipes they have because I keep running into problems finding recipes for smaller countries.
Beshkarmak recipe ingredients
- 3 pounds stew meat
- large onion cut in rings
- bay leaf
- 2 cups broth (enough to cover the meat and onions)
- salt and ground pepper to taste
Making the Beshbarmak
- Place the meat in a deep pot with broth and the onion rings and the bay leaf.
- Bring to a boil, and occasionally skim the scum from the top of the broth.
- Reduce the heat and allow to simmer for 2.5 hours.
- While it is cooking make some egg noodles to add to the soup when it is done.
Beshbarmak
Ingredients

Overall, no one was particularly enthusiastic about the dish as there is not much in the way of seasoning. It has a long time of cooking that onion, but it wasn’t enough to be a strong onion flavor.
I’ll also add the original recipe has you making homemade noodles, but I didn’t really feel like doing that, so I bought some.
Kazakhstan unit notebooking pages
Okay, there are a lot of interesting things to me. My friend named her son Caspian (though in her case it’s because of Caspian from the Narnia books), so I always perk up whenever I hear the name Caspian.
But here are my cool facts for Kazakhstan
- There’s a Beatles monument!
- They claim to be the first nation to domesticate the horse
- They mine so many of different minerals there you can find 100 of the elements there

One response to “Kazakhstan unit”
Wow, you made me look to see that Kazahkstan did in fact move its capital from where it was back when it was part of the Soviet Union. The previous capital was in a seismic zone and even in my memory was nearly destroyed by a big earthquake. Did you know, by the way, that Russian space launch center Baikonur is actually in Kazahkstan? I am now worried if Northern Kazakhstan will be the next place Russia might claim as there is also a large population of Russians living there….
