Learn the Books of the Bible

We have been working with our Sunday School class to learn the Books of the Bible. Several months later all of them are pretty good at finding books of the Bible, and the kids happily compete to earn those M&Ms. This past Sunday, we got a bunch of new kids, and I headed back to the beginning of teaching the Books of the Bible as it’s the basis of all our Bible lessons.

First step to learn the books of the Bible

I have books of the Bible cards. This is my go-to week in and week out with my class.

I pull a card and ask the kids to find the book, chapter, verse, or answer a question about the verse.

These are also used for several of the ideas below. You can buy them or JOIN MY NEWSLETTER and get a coupon to buy them for free.

Then you can read step by step how I teach kids how to find verses in the Bible.

Now on to the other ideas.

Resources to help learn the books of the Bible

First, I’m sure you wondering why learn books of the Bible in the days of e-readers, well as you can see I’ve got an entire post explaining that.

Then we can take some time to learn how did we get the Bible. The answer is over a lot of time with a lot of people writing it.

Then to find what the whole story of the Bible is I suggest picking up 66 Books One Story, that’s my review of it.

And you might try some Books of the Bible songs.

But you might also have some active kids, so let’s see some games you can try.

Books of the Bible games

I’d start off with an Old or New Testament race, which my kids loved playing in the fall. I need to create an add-on game that adds in the category of “Fake.”

For a bit of silliness try to learn the books of the Bible with styrofoam cups, I have several different games to try with that.

Or I put together 10 Ways to memorize the books of the Bible. Some are active and others you just sit at the table.

If you pick up the Books of the Bible card game there are several games you can play with it. I like to play a game of Books of the Bible Go Fish to see how the kids do playing games with me.

This isn’t so much to learn the books of the Bible, but is more to learn the timeline of the Bible with an absolutely ridiculous Bible meme game.

Or that could just be I like memes and like the idea of getting kids to play with them.

Getting a Bible

We encourage kids to bring their own Bible, and reward them for bringing it with the prize of three M&Ms. This means you need to take some time Choosing a children’s Bible. I’ve got a whole slew of suggestions on that page, including a link to My First Hands on Bible review.

It’s also a good idea to work on Finding the right Bible for you. I personally like an ESV study Bible with as wide of margins as I can find.
