Mad Scientist present

July 14, 2017 Ticia 4 Comments

Sometimes when giving a birthday present you don’t want to just give another toy. A few months ago Princess was invited to a birthday party, and I came up with the perfect present for this goofy fun loving girl: A Mad Scientist present. When she came over for Princess’ Harry Potter Birthday party (which apparently I still need to write about, Future Ticia 2022 still hasn’t written about it) she had so much fun with our potions class (slime), and I knew she would love her own collection of these concoctions, this could also make a great science lesson for when you don’t feel up to doing much that you keep squirreled away somewhere.

Collect your Mad Scientists’ recipes

Since I don’t blog on slime recipes, and I know there are tons of brilliant bloggers who’ve already written lots and lots of recipes, I hit Pinterest and looked for slime recipes I could easily replicate without getting anything way too fun.

Recipes I used:

  • Dish Soap Silly Putty
  • Borax slime
  • Cloud dough
  • Moon sand

I went through and made fun little recipe cards for each different Mad Scientist recipe.

Then I collected my materials, most everything I had on hand, but some I needed to buy, here’s what you’ll need:

  • Coconut oil* (I’ve got this on a subscribe and save because we use it for cooking and other stuff)
  • flour* (I am more amused than I should be by the name King Arthur flour)
  • craft sand* (one bottle makes two recipes)
  • corn starch*
  • dish soap*
  • borax*
  • School glue* (You only need the normal bottle size, but I bought a gallon for Princess’ Harry Potter party)

And to contain the various potion ingredients:

  • Ziploc extra small square*
  • Ziploc Twist and loc container*

Putting our Mad Scientist Present all together

I measured out all of the ingredients for each of the recipes and cut out the recipe cards. Then I labeled each of the canisters using a sharpie*, grabbed some yarn from my stash, and tied each recipe up in a stack. Since several recipes use the same materials, it was helpful to tie each stack of ingredients together.

That was an unfortunate timing on my picture.

I slipped the ingredients into a gift bag, and Princess had lots of fun stuffing tissue paper in there, and then we headed off to the party.

What’s funny, all of this started off as part of a birthday party, which I turned into a Harry Potter post for iHomeschool Network.

With that here’s a few Harry Potter or Mad Scientisty type ideas

The person who got it super loved it, and when I next saw her told me all about it.
