Hi, Future Ticia 2025 here, and I’m updating this Book and Activity post with my current logo and giving a bit more information on the book. This was originally part of our Massachusetts Unit, so it could be a great geography lesson as kids work with a map (the activity in this post). I now return you to Past Ticia 2011.

I was trying to come up with a great Make Way for Ducklings* activity for our homeschool geography group. “Make Way for Ducklings” is the ‘Official State Picture book’ of Massachusetts, thanks to a third-grade class lobbying for its inclusion. I was really struggling with what to do that was age-appropriate for little kids and older kids. Then I found this Make Way for Ducklings map idea.

I don’t have a lot of pictures of this activity because they did it while I was reading the story. Okay, I have one, taken afterwards. I went to this page and printed off one of their map pages. As I named the places in the story, they found it and drew how they got there. Unfortunately, that page has been taken down, so here is a link to a Wikipedia map you can print out. (it’s not as good, but it will work).
This was a great activity because it was a struggle for my kids to figure it out the directions, and a great review for the older kids of cardinal directions. My kids really loved it!
