Modern history is a time of great change. There are revolutions, wars, Civil Wars, Impressionism, Industrial Revolution, and so many more exciting events. It makes for a fun time in homeschool history, and one that we thoroughly enjoyed studying. These Modern History lessons overlap quite a lot with my American history lessons, so expect some duplication between the two pages.

Modern history lessons resources

I am adding to this as I find more stuff, but currently we are using The Mystery of History 4* for our spine and adding in quite a few books as I scour my library for some useful books to strew about our house. In addition, these books are some great anchor pieces to leave out as you study modern history.

Soldier a visual history of the fighting man*- This is a great book to pull out to show the changes in a soldier’s gear over the decades

A City Through Time-* There are several books in this vein: A Street in Time*, London in Time*, New York in Time*

Wars of Independence

This time of modern history is all about the colonies breaking away from their mother countries. Well, there are also a few countries, cough cough France, that just decide to get rid of their system of government all together. All in all, this is a time of figuring out who they are as a country.

Everyone suddenly decides they don’t need to kill each other to solve problems, and they can just talk it out. I’m just kidding, this time of modern history is when our wars are more over ideas, and a few of flexing our muscles to assert a national power, but it’s a great time of social upheaval as everyone figures out what to do with themselves in this modern age.

Global History

Shortly after 1900 everyone figured out what one country does affects the rest of the world. This is the time where our world is trying to figure out what it means to live in a global society, and a global economy. To be honest, this part of modern history is still going on as we are still trying to figure out what to do.
