Movies and memory association

Have you ever noticed how much you associate movies with memories?

I was thinking about this as we watched Return of the Jedi on Thursday.

As I watched it I remembered watching it with the youth group in high school.  And a friend of mine leaned over and wondered if we’d fast forward past Princess Leia swinging across the chasm because you could see her but if you watched it in slow motion.  This of course led to me asking him how he knew this.

I also remembered watching all of these movies so often with Sam and Tara.  I thought about watching the final prequel movie just after having the boys and commenting frequently during that movie how she was NOT pregnant with twins, and how much we made fun of it.

Then I got to thinking about other movies I associate with things.  I associate Star Trek movies with my family and growing up.  Deep Space 9 with Jeff because we watched the entire series on DVD together when we were first married.  I associate Shrek with him too, and went to see the sequels because they remind me of dating Jeff.  Sadly the sequels have gotten gradually worse and worse…….

But, it just got me to musing how much movies can trigger memories, both good and bad.  Do you have any movies that trigger memories for you?

  1. I agree about Shek. We just went and saw Shrek 4 at the $2 movie theater and I didnt even laugh during it, I don't think.

Cars will forever remind me of Hayden when he was just a toddler – we watch that movie literally a thousand times, he loved it so much.

My Girl 2 I saw with my first boyfriend and got my first kiss.

Toy Story I saw on my WORST DATE EVER. 'nuff said

French Kiss always reminds me of my mom – she loves this movie and we watched it a thousand times.

Bed of Roses will forever remind me of Mark – we both loved that movie.

The Fifth Element reminds me of my husband, he loves that movie and are son also bears the name of one of the characters…coincidence? I think not.

  3. Interesting post! Strangely, the only movie that really triggers memories for me is a cheesy “Starman”. It's one of the first American movie that I've seen back home and it had (gasp!) a sex scene (well, kind of) in it. Let me put it this way – I have only heard of sex at that point, and I was 19, I think 🙂

  4. As I pondered your question I realize how much TV and movies I do not watch. One movie sticks out in my memory though and will forever be a reminder, I can't even remember the name of it, but it was the movie we were watching when we got the news of our house being on fire. My dad and I went to the drive in and watched the movie again when I was older, but neither one of us could get beyond the scene that was playing when we got that dreadful call. To this day that is the only scene I remember.

I suppose I could add Jaws to the list as that was the only movie my Mom and I went to see together and my mom got so scared through it and her reactions actually made the movie funny for me.

Some movies definitely trigger movies for me. Songs trigger even more!
