October 2019 Homeschooling in Review

I know I say this every month, but October was insane. As is evidenced by my complete lack of writing for most of the month. I’m rather in shock, and my brain is still trying to recover, so here is out October 2019 homeschooling in review.

 

Week 1

We started the month off combining our study of Italy with our previous study of Renaissance artists and tried our hand at painting in the style of different artists, including painting our own Sistine Chapel paintings. We all discovered it is very hard to paint upside down.

Since we were studying Italy, and there were a few Christmas in Italy books at our library we also did a mini Christmas in Italy study complete with some yummy cookies. If I somehow magically get time to write it up expect that (when I get towards the end of the month you’ll see what I’m talking about).

We watched the old BBC mini-series Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, which did not go over well with the kids. Of course, they also were not as big a fan of the book as I am.

Jeff told me I cannot disown the kids over their dislike of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

I suppose that might be true.

I’m studying the book of John with our Precept Bible study, and this passage in John 15 (I may be off by a chapter or two) had me laughing, I did not read what Jesus was saying and think, “Man, Jesus is so completely clear in what He says here.” No, I thought, “Jesus, why are you speaking in circles?”

 

November Week 2

Jeff bought me a season pass to Penfold Theater and we went to our first show for the season, Ghost Quartet, which looked incredibly promising. It was inspired by several different things I love, but the sum of its parts turned into this super weird play that I’m still trying to decide what I thought about it. If you have Amazon Prime, the album is free to listen to there, I’d be really curious to hear what you think about it if you listen or have seen the show.

It was weird, but in many ways it made a great date night because we spent the entire ride back discussing the play and the different characters and the music in it.

The top right picture is a riddle we were given in gaming, it was a series of lines we were given and had to figure out the order they went in, and it was a fun puzzle to solve.

The middle row is one of my memory verses for a Bible Teaching Class I’m taking. I’m a fairly visual learner and so I rewrite the verse each week with lots of illustrations.

And next to that was a history meme I thought was hilarious. I tend to screenshot them now and text them to my kids.

Who sometimes think they’re funny.

The poor kids have no sense of humor.

Or at least not mine.

Bottom row is what my trunk looks like when we head off for park day with our homeschool co-op. Every Friday we load up and head to one of the parks in the area and hang out with our friends. My boys bring these two giant bins of Nerf guns and a zillion darts. It’s really rather amusing.

And that final picture is from a Shadows of Brimstone game where we fought so many things, so many things.

 

Week 3 of 2019 Homeschooling

After reading all about Strega Nona, the kids really wanted to study Russia so they could read all about Baba Yaga and compare the two characters. In the gaming campaign Jeff is running, our characters have run into Baba Yaga a few times (the most recent time) and they kids are quite curious about her. We read several books about her, and then I found some Christmas books for Russia, and the character of Babushka was rather like the Italian character Belfuna.

Princess had her fall Court of Awards for AHG, and she got two new badges and several patches. It’s amazing how much I had to sew on her brand new sash.

Tara came down to visit, so I have probably a hundred pictures of the kids with her baby. Seriously so many pictures, and the kids had a blast playing with baby Cora. There was a lot of fighting over who got to hold the baby. When we took her to park day, she was a huge hit with all of the tween girls.

I ran a gaming campaign for Jeff’s birthday, King Liam (Jeff’s character from his previous birthday campaign)’s twin babies have been kidnapped, and they had to solve the mystery. It started off with this crime scene where they gathered clues.

I also started sketching a possible new shirt I want to make, but I have to first find a pattern to base it off of.

October Week 4 2019

Hmmm….. Most of these pictures are from the very end of week 3 and transitioning into week 4, but cute baby pictures. What can I say, I took a million pictures of cute baby.

While Tara and Josh were down here we celebrated Christmas with them. We gave baby a Buffy the Vampire Slayer picture book because Tara is a ginormous Buffy fan. She immediately had to read it to her, which was cute as can be.

The kids all had fun carrying the baby around, but Batman in particular had fun posing her on people’s shoulder.

The kids were also wildly amused by her being in the chewing on everything stage. My glasses, Batman’s hat, a Shakespeare script…..

We made edible finger paint and decorated our wrapping paper with the baby (I should probably come up with a nickname for her beyond baby). It was quite hilarious to see Josh’s reaction (on Facebook) to his daughter eating paint.

I made some fun potions out of various fruit juices for Jeff’s campaign, and a few of them are still sitting in the frig, I need to wash those out.

And Superman wanted to be a character from World of Warcraft for Halloween, so I spent FOREVER making him a tabard.

Where forever means 10 hours about, so not really forever, but a good long amount of time.

It did turn out pretty good. He made his first ever costume piece by making his own bracers. I had to restrain myself from stepping in and showing how he could make them a bit sturdier and looking a bit more cool.

November is theoretically a bit more calm, but Princess and I are participating in NaNoWriMo, so I’m theoretically writing like a mad woman.
