Our proto school Week in Review

August 16, 2013 Ticia 12 Comments

As I said in my curriculum post, I’m going to try and link up on a semi-regular basis to Week in Review and Collage Friday.  I’m hoping this will keep me accountable.

proto school

And in interests of being open and transparent, these are not the things we did this week, we did this about a week or so ago, I blog on a time delayed basis, so I have time to edit and write before trying to get the post live.  This lets me pretend to be organized.  In reality I am writing this right before I publish it.

002

The week started swimming with Aunt Tara at Uncle Sam’s parents’ house.  I’d show you more pictures, but I was swimming most of the time.  It was a lot of fun hanging out there, it brought back lots of memories of playing there in high school and getting dunked and trying to dunk Sam.  It’s very hard to dunk a person almost a foot taller than you.

014

Monday school was put on hold as we helped Aunt Tara pick up her wedding dress.  The boys brought an entire paper army and spread it out over the floor to entertain themselves as she was fitted.

Reading

quick reading tip

We’ve been continuing with All About Reading 2 {affiliate link}, Princess hit the lesson on open syllables, and I gave her the same tip that worked for Batman: “Draw a line between the syllables to see where it breaks.”  It really helps those visual learners figure it out.

Next week, I’ve got a post planned about organizing All About Reading for multiple learners, and how to entertain the others while their brother or sister is reading.  Stay tuned for that.

dry erase board tip

We complete our grammar on dry erase boards so I have less paper to deal with.  To make my life easier and the kids happier, they are allowed to play for 5 minutes after we’re done.  They always love to show off their artwork.

022

We are continuing to read aloud from The Hobbit {affiliate link}, which the kids think is the best thing ever, and want to finish it in one long marathon reading.  Not gonna happen kids!

Geography and History

023

We didn’t officially start these subjects this week, we made our meal for Around the World in 12 Dishes, but that’s about it.  That was more or less a hit.

Math

004

We started on math this week, and it’s been a bit of a struggle because Saxon Math is soooo different.  I think the switch will end up working out fine, but it’s taking some adjustments from math being completely hands off for me, to our completing part of it together for the instruction period.

Princess has decided her dry erase board is a big help in drawing out the math problems.

Bible

032

We finished up the 10 Plagues of Egypt with a wildly popular locust craft (they made 3 extra later on) and some fun games.  In other news, my Sunday School class finished up a study of the Fruit of the Spirit and this Sunday will be learning about Revelation, I need to get that all finalized for our lesson then.

047

Towards the end Superman got rather silly and started painting himself.  He thought this was quite hilarious.

Stay tuned because tomorrow I’m going to be sharing a Fruit of the Spirit Bible Study I got to review.

Science

making a KWL chart

In Science we kicked off our anatomy studies with discussing what we know, and what we want to learn.  It was rather interesting to me to find out what they’re curious about, we’re gonna have a bit of religion mixed in with our science this year with Princess’ question “What is a soul?”.

anatomy notebook

We got started on our notebooks for the year with discussions of how people used to view anatomy, with many promises from me that we will cover some of those more in depth in our history (mummification, in particular, they want to mummify another chicken).

My Projects for the week

004

Continuing my cleaning and organizing I’ve been working on, I finished up our school room with some help from the kids.  Look how strong they are!

002

I spent a good chunk of time tearing out pages for their math so I could be ready to start the school year in more serious forms the next week.

082

And I worked on our timeline some more.  I finally finished that project up Wednesday night.  It took forever, but it’s done and I can reuse it for years now.

Pictures to make me smile

011

Playing with his Melissa & Doug Castle (great investment, they’ve played with it nonstop for over 4 years now), this is actually one of two of their castles we have.

030

Watching Peter Pan with their cousin and Mimi (my Mom).

010

Reading together (with Aunt Tara’s dog).

013

Playing at a friend’s neighborhood pool.

Well, that’s our week in review.  Next week I’m going to be writing a series called “I Can’t Teach because I’m a Mess!”  Come see how I’m overcoming my messiness.

Yes it is, I learned a lot making that wall, like magnetic paint does not really come off of you like latex paint does, and other things…….

Looks like fun! I’ve been randomly reading out loud from The Hobbit, too! Mainly because that’s the only way I get to read it again 🙂 And I love your magnetic wall! Thanks for sharing. Have a great weekend!

The big push came because the kids really want to see the new Hobbit movie and I told them they can’t watch it until we’ve read the book. We’ve only got 100 pages left, so it’s really close to done.

Looks like a great start to your year! I always giggle at these posts, just as you are all gearing up for a new year, we are starting to get ready for our end of year, only a couple more months to go for us 🙂

I always forget that until I see a picture from one of the Aussie blogs I read, and their weather is so opposite ours.

I don’t always remember to do it, but the times I do I’m glad because it is a big help to get them on track.

Sigh, back when the kids were younger and napped, and before the advent of all these ways to edit our pictures, I’d spend a couple of hours on Friday writing my posts for the week. That doesn’t happen anymore. Now, it’s catch as I can, in theory I spend time in the morning doing this, but in reality I stare at my computer and blink.
