This is one of those odd lessons that Jesus taught. It’s also one that isn’t a super common Bible lesson. Almost everyone can retell the Parable of the Uclean Spirits in some form or other, but it’s not a common Sunday School lesson, but it’s a good Parables lesson to teach. Though I had the hardest time thinking of what craft I wanted to do with my kids.

The Parable of the Unclean Spirits Lesson

This entire thing came about because Jesus was teaching, and there was a man with a demon in him that he cast out the demon, and the Pharisees saw it and said, “Well, clearly Jesus is in league with Satan.”

Now, Jesus isn’t one to back down from a challenge, so he decided to tell a story.

And, this is one of the stories I have a video of my kids telling on YouTube from ages ago.

You know, I’m going to have to come up with a lot of filler on Sunday when I teach this lesson, because this story acted out is all of 2 minutes long.

That is not a very long lesson.

But, let’s talk application.

What do we do with Parables of the Unclean Spirits?

So here’s the question, what happens when you get rid of something bad?

Every week when we teach about parables, I ask them what parables are. Parables are a small story with a big idea. Each story has one big idea they are conveying.

Look at this story, it’s conveying the concept of what do you do when you give up something bad for you? Like several years ago my brother realized he was an alcoholic, and he needed to get rid of alcohol. The thing is you can’t just get rid of a bad thing.

You have to replace it with something good.

And that is what Jesus is pointing out in this story. The man threw out the demon, but he did not replace it with anything. So there was a giant hole for those demons to come back in and make it worse.

So that’s what our craft is. I sat forever trying to think of a great craft for this. I didn’t want to make demons, and so, I finally came up with:

Good Habits mini notebook

Now, I didn’t have the supplies to make the sample I wanted. I pulled out my mini notebook and then I discovered I don’t have any small stickers in my stash of craft supplies, and I only have markers. So I will be updating my post after Sunday when the kids and I make our good habits tracking.

So, what habits will I bet tracking in my mini-notebook?

  • reading my Bible
  • prayer requests
  • exercise

Those are three things that are good to do, and that I am not always the best at. As I take care of my spiritual life, it is also good to care for my physical life.

I’ll be curious what sorts of things the kids will decide to keep track of in their notebooks.

And, that’s our lesson. I’m curious, what crafts or games would you do with this lesson?

And I need to update and get uploaded the actual printed lesson, I don’t have it uploaded yet, that’s how much I don’t have these things done on the website. It’s kind of weird to have that be true.
