Music and Movies to praise God with your kids

This is one of my favorite pictures of Princess.  She’s singing a song from her CDs and doesn’t care if you’re looking at her.  She’s singing to God as I prep for Sunday School.

Sigh, I cannot find the original of this picture, it makes me so very sad. So, no great pinnable image, just this

Princess loves to sing.  She sings as she gets dressed, as she plays, as she does her schoolwork.  If I can teach something through song, she will remember it.  She sings along with the ads on the radio in our car.

I still remember many of the songs I learned when I was her age, so I know the power of songs and of listening to the same song or movie OVER and OVER and OVER again.

I’m always on the lookout for new music or videos to share with my kids because while Princess learns great and remembers the music, her brothers remember videos.  They need the movement of the movie to remember it.

So I give you some great audio-visual resources that my kids love and we use in the order that I think of them:

Psalty Kid’s Praise!

There’s a collection of about 11 CDs, DVDs, a Bible, and more (it’s linked to MY favorite album).  Princess loves to listen to these non-stop.  I used to listen to these as a girl and now that I’m listening to them as an adult I notice how subtly good theology is woven into a fun storyline.  Side note, listening to these does require a high tolerance for kid music, which my husband has none of, so we don’t listen to it when he’s in the car.

Seeds of Worship, etc

Bible verses put to music.  You memorize scripture as you sing along.  Again Princess loves these, and our recent trip she asked to listen to the ONE CD we have about a million times.  That is only a slight exaggeration.  Future Ticia 2023 is adding we have many more than just that first one now.

I’m also going to add, one that’s more of a calming music style, Scripture Lullabies.

Adventures in Odyssey

If Princess thrives on Psalty and music, the boys thrive on Adventures in Odyssey.  We have a significant chunk of their sets and listen to them A LOT.  My boys have the Bible Eyewitness set up in their room and listen to it every night as they go to sleep.  They’ve surprised me with some of the things they come downstairs telling me about.

What’s in the Bible

I have every single one of their DVDs, and their CD of music.  I LOVE these.  I’m learning from watching these, and these DVDs hit all of my kids’ learning styles.  There’s music for Princess and movement and humor for my boys.  We will often watch these at lunchtime and talk about them during that time.

VeggieTales

Many of these are retellings of Bible stories, I will say some of the more recent ones are more of nice stories than Biblical lessons, so we haven’t been buying these as much recently.  But, I love their Jonah movie and so many of the early DVDs that had Bible stories or stories of heroes of the faith.  Jeff and I still make jokes and references to their Jonah movie and call people “fishslappers!”  Again like What’s in the Bible these movies are great for audio and visual learners.

Bibleman

I have to be honest, I don’t care for these as much as my boys do.  Bibleman is a superhero who quotes Bible verses and uses the “Sword of the Spirit,” so of course they think it’s cool.  I’m not as enamored of the flashy lights and silly dialogue.  Again though, it’s a great way to see Bible verses in action, so I’m not going to knock it.

What music or DVDs do you use?  I’d like to expand our music selection, but I’ve had mixed results with buying music CDs.  So, I’m on the lookout for some great suggestions.

*** By the way who now has the Sesame Street song “Sing, sing it long, sing it loud, sing your whole life long…..” stuck in their head?

  1. I remember through song too. I can still sing all fifty states in alphabetical order and I learned that in elementary school!

    Love the picture of Princess!

That’s from The Carpenters! Love that song…

Singing is big in our house 🙂

  3. That is a very cute picture of her.

  4. I have a “singer” in the house too- Baby Girl- she even sings while she is sitting on the toilet!

(BTW, GREAT selections in music for the kiddos! We are especially fond of the Seeds Worship CD’s in this house…)

  5. My two really like both Walking with the Wise and To Be Like Jesus– two Sovereign Grace Music CDs. The first is based in Proverbs and the second on the Fruit of the Spirit. My 3 year old continually asks “Mommy, what’s this song about?” and we have great conversations as a result!

    1. I’ll have to look into that because I love that music that sparks conversations. I’ve gotten so many great ones from our Seeds CD and from Adventures in Odyssey.

  6. my daughter has recently discovered adventures in odyssey. the “focus on the family” app for iphones and the “AIO” app for android (both free) have a bunch of ones that you can listen to. and the list does change every now and then with new ones. so we have been listening that way in the car.

    1. I’ll have to check into that, I didn’t know there was one!
