Princess is in surgery now, or will be at some point today
At some point, today Princess will be going into surgery. As I write this on Friday, my heart is mostly at peace with this. The doctor is a good doctor, and it is a fairly routine outpatient surgery. However, I’m also remembering how her brother did coming out of his surgery last fall. When he came out of the anesthesia he was violent and ripped out his IV, and was generally mad at the world. It took almost half an hour before he calmed down. So, I’m a little worried she might react like that. I have to admit I do like this picture though, there’s something funny about her eating salad bigger than her face.
I’m also a little worried for the next few days after the surgery. She’s going to be in two casts. She should be able to walk with them, but she’s a bit of a klutz normally, I’m worried about with two casts on. That, and trying to keep her relatively calm for a while because I don’t want her running around with casts. I’m very blessed that my Mom is keeping the boys for the night and during the surgery.
I’m sure I’ll be posting later today that the operation was successful, and be sharing a picture of Princess with her pink casts, but right now I’m wool-gathering a little and borrowing trouble. So, everyone be praying all goes well.
Oh, and my friend with cancer will have had his latest scans yesterday, be praying there’s some good news to be had when they get results back.
The surgery went great!
We’re home from the hospital, and aside from everyone being tired and somewhat grumpy, it all went well.
Surgery was scheduled for 7:30 this morning, and we had to be there at 6:00, which meant to make sure we made it to the hospital on time we had to get up at 4:30. That was not fun.
She did great waiting for the doctors and was mostly patient. Every time she started to think about being thirsty or hungry she was ready to go home but was usually easily distracted.
The surgery was less than an hour, we spent longer waiting to start it and talking to all of the various doctors, nurses, and what have you than we did waiting.
She came out of it much better than Superman did. It also seemed like this hospital did better at taping the IV down, I don’t know if that’s because we warned them of her brother’s reaction or because that’s their procedure. It was taped to her arm in about 4 different places and her arm was taped to a board.
She really did not like her casts for the first several hours after waking up and was desperate to get them off. That has settled down to occasionally poking at them from time to time.
At about 11:00 she wanted to see her brothers and they came by for a while. They very excitedly gave her a movie to watch and a Batman toy. Then they proceeded to tell her “God wants us to share.” That part just cracked us up. But, she happily ignored them and played with her new Batman guys.
So, the big prayers now are:
1. That she can figure out how to walk in these casts. As you can see from the picture, they’re almost up to her knees. So far she’s successfully crawled about a yard. Maybe. She’s gotten pretty good at scooting around on her bottom.
2. She still is trying to convince us to take her cast off from time to time. I’m hoping this will ease with time, but could definitely use prayers in this area.
Thank you to everyone who has prayed for us so far today. We felt those prayers as we sat at the hospital and waited for news.
What we didn’t read this week (originally its own post)
So……. I’m sure you’re not at all surprised to learn we didn’t really read all that much this week. Unless you count watching lots of Reading Rainbow episodes on DVD.
Instead Princess got her way and I read to her an insanely large number of Clifford books. We go through phases of being wildly in love with Clifford and reading his books nonstop. For a short period of time 6 months ago it seemed like I couldn’t find Clifford books fast enough to suit them.
And, here’s my confession time….. Are you ready.
I very briefly considered giving the kids to the first taker on Thursday. It was one of those days where I swear they were trying to see who could drive Mom craziest. The whininess. The crying. The “Mommy hold me,” and that was from the kids who didn’t have surgery. She was much worse.
But, the good news is that after that horrible day on Thursday it was like someone came and switched the horrible kids and gave me mostly pleasant ones. Aside from major meltdown problems about who was sitting next to me at lunch everyone was good. And I so needed that after Thursday.
But, I guess it all gets better when you go in to check on the “Sleeping Beauty,” and this is what you see.
Isn’t that cute? She’s sleeping in our room for the duration of her cast.
Results of surgery a week later

Just to give a quick update on Princess. She’s figure out how to walk on carpet. She can’t yet walk on the tile with her casts, but she’s figured out how to crawl. I am still very eagerly looking forward to these casts coming off because I can’t get anything done while she has the casts on. So, no house cleaning, very little cooking, make that no cooking. I’m going a little stir crazy. So, be praying I can endure……..
I could claim this was organized physical activity, but that would just be a lie. So to give it a more accurate title. The boys had a blast playing. Batman rode his bike in circles forever chasing a local kid. Superman decided he wanted to shoot bows and arrows. We had to go over the rules for using those again, but other than that no major problems.
Oh, I forgot. We did have to add a new rule. No shooting arrows straight up. He almost landed an arrow right on top of the house that we would never have gotten down. That and it nearly fell right on top of his head. So rules for shooting: don’t shoot it at people, only shoot into the grass, don’t shoot straight in the air. I’m sure there’s another I’m not thinking of as I write this morning.
Princess spent most of the time happily sitting in the chair supervising…… Sometimes I think she takes that nickname too seriously. And, on a completely unrelated note my kids are totally addicted to Dinosaur Train right now. Here’s Batman mesmerized by it. I think this has even replaced heroes shows as their favorite.

I'll definitely be thinking of Princess today and hoping she has a much better reaction to coming out of the anesthesia. I'll also keep your friend in my thoughts. Hopefully you'll be posting good news for both of them later today.
Oh goodness, I will be thinking of you both. Waiting on an update.
Three of mine have had surgery, and none of them handled it the same. So maybe it won't be as hard this time.
Hugs
I will be thinking of Princess today and keeping you close. I can't wait for an update on her and on your friend. (((Hugs)))
Thinking of your little one!

Fingers and toes are crossed for a speedy recovery and some adorable pink casts! : )
