Real Life Homeschooling: Knowing when to set the books aside

I was struggling with what I was going to write about this month, because most of this month has been a roller coaster of ups and downs with emotions, and family and things like that.

Last week I had planned to start school on Monday, I had everything put together, lesson plans printed, math put together.

And then we spent Saturday wedding dress shopping for my best friend.  She found the perfect dress, and had to pick it up on Monday or she might loose it.  **Side note, none of these are the ones she chose**

I knew she would need moral support, because we were in her first wedding, the entire family was.  But, her first husband died of cancer, and it was hard, very hard.  For all of us.

So, I had a choice, I could keep to our lessons, or I could stop and support a friend, and I chose to support my friend.  And my kids learned a lesson as well.  Sometimes what’s in the book isn’t what’s important, being there for others is.

Because we both went home that day and cried, and I’m writing this post now with tears in my eyes.  I’m happy for her she’s found love again, and I’m happy she’ll be married, but I’m also sad, because I miss her first husband.  I miss my friend, the one I grew up with, so it was one we both needed to be there, because life is hard sometimes and takes unexpected turns.

As a side note, Princess is through the roof happy because she is going to be a flower girl, and gets to wear a “wedding dress.”  She was quite disappointed (tears and all) to learn she would not be wearing a wedding dress just like Aunt Tara.  I’m sure you will be seeing posts in the near future as I make her flower girl dress.  Of the ones she tried on, this design most went with the theme of the wedding, and just looked lovely on Princess.

So, in the end, I did have a post, just not the one I thought I had.  Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go sob in the shower for an hour or so as I process a lot of emotions going on.
