Review AND Giveaway: Disney’s Brave

November 6, 2012 Ticia 62 Comments

I’ll admit it right now, I’m a sucker for a good fairy tale.  Half of MY books are variations on fairy tales, the other half are daring heroic tales.  So when I was asked about reviewing the upcoming Disney’s Brave DVD I didn’t have to think twice.

Brave review, great family movie

Disney Brave’s DVD FEATURES

5 discs-Blue Ray, 2nd Blue Ray disc with more Bonus features, 3D Blue Ray, DVD, digital copy

over 10 short films: La Luna (from the theatrical release), Legend of Mordu, Dirty Hairy People, and many more

watching Brave

WHAT WE LOVED about Disney’s Brave

the triplets, if you haven’t seen the movie yet, you’ll laugh at Merida’s younger brothers who are little rascals

her father, Jeff and I loved how he was a strong father figure even if he was fallible

okay, I’ll just say her whole family.  I laughed at loud at the parents discussing Merida’s stubbornness, I foresee many conversations like that someday in my house

Merida, she’s a fun character

the crazy witch, I mean woodcarver

THINGS TO BE AWARE OF in Disney’s Brave

there are two scenes where you see naked backsides, there is nothing sexual about it, it’s played for laughs, but it is there

the bear in this movie can be scary, if your little one is prone to nightmares keep that in mind

one of the scenes with the witch is a little scary at times, but overall she’s funny.

OUR OVERALL RATING of Disney’s Brave

10 enthusiastic thumbs up, the kids got a little scared at some of the scenes but right after watching the movie the boys eagerly headed out to shoot bows and arrows, and Princess happily pretended to be Merida.  In my book any movie that leads to pretend play and my kids doing things together is a good movie.

Our plans for the upcoming Brave movie playdate

Make a bow and arrow out of popsicle sticks for the kids

Print and play with Brave print outs

What food do you suggest?  Leave a comment for your first entry to win the Brave DVD.

My girls SO want to see this movie! They keep asking me if it’s available on Netflix yet. I’m glad to read your family’s opinion of it 🙂 A Brave movie play date sounds like tons of fun!

I haven’t seen it yet…but I think it’d be fun to have food related to the movie…as well some food you need to be brave to try!

The naked backsides disturbs me…why oh why do they add such things!!!??

Food? Since you’re talking about Brave, and Brave takes place in Scotland (that’s all I know about it, haven’t seen it yet), I’d have to say Haggis.

I agree about fairy tales! My kids are older now and I believe they learned so many life lessons from the millions (okay, hundreds?) of fairy tales we read together!

Our favorite snack is air popped popcorn, drizzled with olive oil and maple syrup, and just a pinch or two of salt. We call it Sticky Popcorn 🙂 It’s a must on movie nights!

I have an idea. My Scottish shortbread made with Real Butter, Vanilla Extract, and a dash of Almond Extract (it adds a nice flavor to them). The kids like them. Sausages or cocktail weenies or both cooked in a Crockpot with a homemade bar-b-que sauce served with toothpicks that look like swords! Potato rolls would be good with that. You could call it “Haggis”, but they would be ok with it, because they’d recognize the flavors as something not too far out there. Maybe salt potatoes for on the side. We could also munch on this trail mix I call Mountain Man Mix. I could try to look for my Tartan online (because I am part Scottish-Barr on my mom’s side :D) and show them, then we could take towels, and pretend we’re all wearing kilts! That guy from the previews looks like a riot! Maybe we could use scarves to look like those purse things that hold everything down for the gents…Then I could show my youngest who’s 8 how to do stage combat swordfight properly so they don’t hurt each other, Go outside and swordfight for a while after eating- maybe midway through like a real intermission like real theatre does it. Then refresh ourselves with (Eggnog) “Grog” milkshakes after. We could set it all up to be eaten on our picnic blanket in the living room, and eat while we watch the movie. Whatcha think?

I don’t know much about scottish food, but I’m sure we could come up with something fun! I like the idea of bear claws. We haven’t seen the movie in the theater because my oldest daughter said it would be too scary for my 5 year old twins on such a big screen. I like the ability to fast forward at home if I need too.
