Romania Unit

Our Romania unit was a fun one. There wasn’t much to it, but Romania has a bit of fun personality to its portrayal in the movies. According to what I’ve learned, there is an element of truth in that portrayal, which made me smile. All in all a rather fun geography lesson, let’s talk about it.

All right, let’s get started!

Romania! The land of gypsies and mystery, and so much more.

I was thoroughly amused by Romania.

And for a random collection of information:

Romania Unit: Romanian sausages

Romanian sausages recipe Mititei

I decided to make these Romanian sausages, and while I was making them I discovered they are essentially meatballs in a different shape. This means, I’ve added yet another meatball to my growing meatballs around the world post. It’s going to be a thing someday.

Romanian sausages ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound ground turkey (they used pork, but I can get turkey)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 3-9 minced garlic cloves (YES! keep the vampires away)
  • 2 teaspoons thyme
  • 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 2 teaspoons caraway seeds
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper

Putting together the ingredients and making the Romanian sausages

  1. Mix together all those ingredients, make sure it’s thoroughly mixed. The instructions said to let it sit in the refrigerator for at least 6 hours, I ignored that, because who remembers these things ahead of time?
  2. Then form into small sausages (I made mine roughly the same size as breakfast sausages)
  3. Now the instructions I linked to said to grill them in a pan, but that would take FOREVER to get it all cooked, so I baked them in the oven at 350 for about 15 or so minutes, and it worked out just fine.
  4. I served them with baked potatoes, and it was more or less popular, though there was a lot of requests for gravy to go with it.
Yield: 20 sausages

The most amusing thing I learned about Romania is the black magic tax. They’ve realized everyone associates their country with mystery and magic, and they’ve decided to capitalize on it. Which I have to say is rather smart, it increases tourism.

But the reality is it’s a modern country and produces a fair amount of electronics (it’s been interesting learning just how many of these European countries are known for their electronic production, and wine, lots of wine).

Oh, and if you’re curious you can fit 2.8 Romania in Texas.

That’s a very important fact to learn. That’s what I keep telling my kids even if they don’t find it anywhere near as amusing as I do.

  1. Ah, benefits of living in a gigantic state! Of course, California is pretty big, too.

My brother lived in Romania for a while. Fascinating place!
