Tigers lesson
I thought about quoting the Wizard of Oz, “Lions, and Tigers, and Bears, Oh my!” But I’m not covering two out of three, so I won’t……
We’ve finished up our chapter on feliforms. Doesn’t that sound official? Feliforms. We had a lot of fun putting together our layered book on them, and playing some games related to the different animals (especially the cougar game, they kids are still talking about it). Most of our lessons were rather run of the mill, but they loved our lessons on tigers.
First we read about it in our Land Animals textbook. They were especially impressed when they read some tigers can take down an elephant.
That’s actually what Batman wrote about tigers. It cracked me up with his illustrations. Then we kept reading and found out how high they can jump.
Tigers can jump a 9 foot fence, which is one of the problems in India. It’s a struggle to build a fence the tiger can’t jump.
When I was looking for videos to illustrate tigers jumping I found several stories about tigers jumping out of their enclosures at the zoo.
The other thing we learned is you can’t escape from a tiger by swimming away. There are even some tigers that love to swim.
After reading all of that and watching several videos on tigers from a couple of different websites, we proceeded to play a hunting game.
First all of the kids were blind-folded to simulate what it would be like in the heavy jungle. You can’t see too far and the other animals are using their fur and feathers to camouflage themselves.
Then each kid took turns being the tiger. They had to hunt down their brother and sister just from the sounds they heard.
They discovered very quickly that is a lot harder than it looks. It’s hard to find exactly where things are just by listening. Especially for our rather unrefined ears.
From here we’ve moved on to marsupials. Stay-tuned, I’ve got some fun stuff for that.
Let’s see what others did this week:
Each week I’m spotlighting a few posts that were shared previously. Many posts get linked up later in the week and they don’t always get as many clicks as they deserve, so I’m trying to spotlight a few every week.

Over at Highhill Homeschool she shared some fun ideas that combine history and science to clean up old coins. I’d never seen some of the variations they tried before.

Over at All Things Beautiful she had a fun study of protozoans. I had the hardest time deciding on a category for this post. I ended up putting it in my general science Pinterest board.
No Doubt Learning shared another week of their worm studies. If you haven’t been following this series, I highly recommend checking it out.
Caution! Twins at Play (I’ve felt like saying that about my boys for YEARS!) has a great list of science ideas to do with pre-schoolers. It’ll keep you busy for months.

Looks like a fun story. I love the look of your school room.
Thanks! I keep thinking about rearranging it, but never quite get to it.
Tigers would be such a fun topic – I’ll have to put that down on my list! Not only that, but they could see one at the zoo in person! I’m trying to incorporate more writing for my daughter into our lessons. I love your kids’ writing samples with the illustrations! Thanks for the link!:)
I love how they act out what they are learning.
Completely off topic, I REALLY LIKE THAT RUG WITH THE MOMMY RABBIT READING TO THE BUNNIES, BEAUTIFUL!!
Thank you for sharing.
Thanks! We got it when we moved into the house from Discount School Supply. It looks like it’s discontinued though, but we’ve got two of their carpets in our house and they stand up great to everything.
I am so envious of your bookshelves – and the space to have them!
I’m very excited, I’ve finally got something to link up! Thanks for hosting! Have a great week…oh, and I also like your rug very much.
Sounds like an exciting lesson. My grandfather used to work for a circus as an engineer and designed a Spartacus show with tigers. I still remember being very fascinated with them when I was watching that show. Intelligent creatures!
