South America Unit

Before we started learning about South America for our geography. I knew a couple of things. I knew about the Amazon River and the rain forest. You can’t have grown up in the 90s and not heard about the rain forest, and how we were going to DESTROY IT NOW! Fern Gully, evil bulldozers are going to destroy the fairy home. Then I grew up and started to find more history sources and I learned all about Simon Bolivar and how he “freed” half of South America. It’s fun to hit a country and discover it was one of the countries he helped liberate as Superman and I drop random facts in our geography lessons as we go through our South America Unit.

The primary resource for the South America Unit

First, our South America notebooking pages. That right there is a great basis for all sorts of amazing lessons. You can go as in-depth as you want to with each of these mini-units.

What book lists I have will be on each individual South America Unit. Just assume I have amazing books to read.

Not really, sadly many South American countries don’t have as many easy-to-find picture books.

But I do have a video list for you to watch.

I also like to have the kids put together the South America continent puzzle (part of the whole world puzzle set, one for each continent).

Now let’s talk the individual South America Units

South America has a lot more “big” countries, and so while it’s more or less the same size as many of the other continents, it has half of the countries. And unlike North America, all of those islands around it aren’t countries. They’re just part of other countries.

I may just finish off the South America Unit like I did with the Europe Unit just so that I can have another continent done. It’s a short enough country list and I’m over half done with South America, I just have to finish it.

Hmmm…. Maybe I’ll change my geography plans for the month.

  1. I lived in Bolivia for a couple years, so my knowledge of Bolivar is all from my Bolivian history classes in middle school.
