Several years ago the kids and I were taking part of a cook around the world group. We covered Spain then, but Superman and Princess both wanted to study their way through Europe, so we did a quick review of our Spain unit, and these are our Spain children’s books we grabbed from the library. There were a few books we didn’t read this time around, but I’m including them because they’re rather fun.

Generic Spain children’s books
Christopher Columbus– Since I already had an entire list for him, I’ll just send you over there
The Secret Shofar of Barcelona– I loved this look at the Spanish Inquisition, a hard to cover time in history, and a good children’s book of how one Jewish family hid in plain sight
You Wouldn’t Want to Sail in the Spanish Armada– We did a whole bunch of lessons on this, but it was more from the point of view of England than Spain
Spanish Fairy Tales
Bernal and Florinda– Bernal wishes to marry Florinda, but her father won’t let this poor farmer marry his daughter. Follow as Bernal outwits her father
Don Quixote and the Windmills– A short part of the Don Quixote story, but a fun part
The King and the Magician– The king discovers someone holds more power in the kingdom, than he does and tries to find the person
Three Golden Oranges– This was my favorite story about three brothers who go to a wise woman to find out how to find wives
Spain Children’s books about bull-fighting
Little Egret and Toro– I loved this book about an egret bird trying to save her friend the bull from the bull-fighting ring even if he doesn’t want to be saved
The Story of Ferdinand the Bull– The classic story of the bull who just wanted to smell flowers
The Little Matador– This is the cutest book about a young boy who doesn’t want to follow in the family tradition of bull-fighting

Spain Children’s books about their culture or art
And Picasso Painted Guernica– This is a much more in-depth book, and I mainly used it for reference and occasional things to look at
Building on Nature, the Life of Antoni Gaudi– The weather wasn’t right to do any of the activities I wanted to do with this book, now that it’s spring I’m going to check it out again to do something fun with it.
Diego Rivera, the Artist of the People– This was checked out at the time we did our study, so I’ll have to go back and cover him again
El Greco– we did not do too much with this because we went to an exhibit of his artwork, and the kids were quite weirded out by it
Lumpito and the Painter from Spain– it looks like this one is out of print, so if you can find it at your library or a used book store, it is the cutest story ever about Picasso
Salvador Dali– sadly this book was checked out, but it looked really cool
