Texas: Ima Hogg and Strap Buckner
When I did my research into the books our library had I was lucky enough to find out there were two books about Ima Hogg. Ima Hogg is a bit of a local legend mainly for her name.
Her father was the governor of Texas and so she got to travel all over. As a result she became somewhat famous. And her name really was Ima Hogg. According to legend she also had a sister named Ura….. Reading this book taught he that is just coloring added into a fun story. There was just Ima and a few brothers….. on a wild animal farm raising ostriches outside of Houston.
Now to Strap Buckner, he was one of the “Old 300 Settlers,” a group of Anglos who settled in Texas in 1823. He was larger than life and larger than everyone else. He was tall and outweighed everyone in the area. He didn’t have many friends because of his tendency to greet people with a resounding back slap that knocked them over. This eventually got him into trouble with some people.
I introduced both of them before talking about what we did because both activities I did could be used for either one of them (click on the picture if you want to use our printables)
For Ima Hogg we read two books The Wild Texas Stampede! and Ima & the Great Texas Ostrich Race (both affiliate links). After reading them all we came up with her next adventures.
Apparently after riding an ostrich and helping stop a terrible stampede, she proceeded to ride a T-rex, a manta ray, and a horse. Can you guess which kiddos said what?
We also read The Legend of Strap Buckner: A Texas Tale (affiliate link), like I said, he’s a character, and more legend than fact in this book. So we took the time to separate the fact from the fiction.
It was a fact he knocked people down. He did not disappear, and he did not….. Okay I can’t decipher the phonetic spelling.
And, I’d write more, but Jeff start “Muppet Christmas Carol,” and it’s one of my favorite Christmas movies. So, I’ll leave you to think of ways you can use this
Okay, movie’s over, so I’m going to update with the blogs I’m linking up to:

I really like your study of legends and tales!
This is a great activity – it’s always good to look at stories and see where facts end and fiction begins, and tall tales are perfect for that.
You always find very interesting geography/history books. I am sure Princess selected a horse. We love Muppet Christmas Carol here too
