Get the most out of an impromptu field trip!

June 23, 2009 Ticia 2 Comments

One way we avoid buying too many random souvenirs is by getting postcards. The boys found ones of Union Station Saint Louis, Missouri and so we decided to make our stop for lunch that day there, and it became a great impromptu field trip.

Union Station post card inspiration

This is my rendition of the postcard they found. We had a fabulous lunch eating crackers and sausage (a great travel lunch you can pack in a cooler). It had been a bit of a miserable morning with Superman throwing up all morning. He was feeling better and ate like crazy, of course, this is after he threw up all over the car and after he threw up all over Jeff.

The fun of Union Station Saint Louis, Missouri

They had lots of fun splashing in the fountain. It was amazing how they found the one puddle next to the fountain and splashed like crazy.

Union Station has been transformed into a very cool mall and museum. The great thing is it’s free! We had a blast looking at the model trains.

(Doesn’t that photo look cool?)

Then we went by the coin rides and had fun pretending to drive helicopters and such stuff.

3 Tips for Getting the most out of spontaneous field trips

So our field trip to Union Station in Saint Louis, Missouri. I have to keep adding that because there are Union Stations all over the country. Every time I think of it, I think of Union Station at Kansas City, Missouri, because it’s the one we’ve visited a couple of times.

  1. Look for the small moments. I was surprised to find some amazing stained glass at Union Station. The model train set was fascinating and made total sense for a former train station (which leads to the second point)
  2. Learn the history of the area. I love historical markers. You can learn a lot from them, and it can show you an event you might not have known about. Look for paintings and statues to examine.
  3. Take a break from learning to have fun. Always take every chance you get to splash in the puddles or climb on the playground.

Looks like fun! Sorry about the sick episode. I'm constantly amazed that I haven't dealt with vomit once with Esme yet – though I've had my own episodes twice today. Ugh…
