The week of swimming

This past week has been a week of goofing off.  And it was a planned week of goofing off.

Since we knew Tara was coming into town this week, I printed off two weeks of Illuminations schedules to complete.

And we completed large portions of it, or at least enough that we pretty much took this entire week off of school.  But there were a few things we did last Friday as we waited for Tara to get into town.

Sun unit make a sun craft

Friday was when we completed most of our sun activities I wrote about on Sunday.

starting earth science

We also played a Days of Creation game to go with one of the activities for week 1 of CKE Earth and Space.  The kids always welcome an excuse to pull these bean bags out, so I happily did so.  Want to make your own:  Days of Creation bean bag instructions (printable is there).

So, that was Friday.  Now on to the rest of the week, which is not going to be in any sort of Chronological order, more of a thematic thing.

week of swimming

Saturday we went swimming over at Uncle Sam’s parent’s house (Tara’s 1st husband who died from cancer about 5 years ago).  Tara was supposed to be there, but her Mom was in the hospital, with what we found out on Monday or Tuesday was stage 4 breast cancer (we’d appreciate any and all prayers on that one).

Tuesday we went swimming to celebrate “Not Back to School Day,” and I was quite amused to be stopped on the way there to be asked about homeschooling.  I had a quick conversation, and then was off to catch up with kiddos.

Yesterday we went to Schlitterbahn, a local waterpark and spent the entire day there and here’s my big miracle: NO ONE GOT SUNBURNED!  That is a first.  We spent the day going down water slides, riding the “lazy river,” and generally having fun.

giving aunt tara presents

Monday was Aunt Tara’s birthday, and the kids had a lot of fun making her birthday presents and giving them to her.  They’ve been staying up hours past their bedtime to get a chance to see her each night because Tara’s been at the hospital all day long helping her Mom, which has led to a lot of tears and disappointment as they thought they’d be spending all week long playing with her.

Hezekiah lesson

We learned about Hezekiah and had fun building walls of Jerusalem.  Oh, and then later we did a very little bit of history and finished up week 2 of MOH2.  I still have a few activities planned to do with those lessons that we need to do.

how my kids learn

These were some random pictures I’d taken over the last week or so, and they just amuse me.  The kids all seem to learn in very unusual ways, and I just had to laugh at Princess’ thinking position.  It’s certainly better than her phase or walking and standing in the corner whenever she had to think of math facts.

And to finish up, here’s all of my random favorite photos from the week.

weapons from TP rolls

One of the days Tara wasn’t able to be here the kids amused themselves making weapons out of empty toilet paper rolls.  I was treated to weapon after weapon as the boys posed for pictures.

lost tooth

Princess lost a tooth this week, and is very very proud of the fact.  It also makes me happy to see that missing spot, and I just want to take so many pictures of her with the missing tooth as she grins at me.  So if you see more pictures of her than usual right now, it’s because she looks so darn cute.

sunscreen boy

Superman had problems putting sun screen on yesterday, actually all 3 of them did, but I actually managed to get a picture of him, and it made me smile.

hug attack

And the “awwwwww” picture of the week.  This is a common sight as the kids say bye to Jeff in the morning, they charge him and encourage everyone to get in on a “family hug.”  Their other favorite thing to do: when Jeff is getting ready to leave they shout out, “Barricade the doors.”  Then they all line up and don’t let him pass until they’ve all attacked him with hugs.  Lots of hugs.  It makes me smile in my semi-awake haze.

014

I am now off to enjoy a cuppa tea in my fancy new diffuser and watch my boys thoroughly trounce Tara as she plays Trojans to their Greeks.

I’ll link up to Homegrown Learners.

  1. Love, love, love all of your pictures. You guys are so much fun and Princess IS so darned cute, even more than usual (which I didn’t know was possible.) I will be praying.

    1. Thank you for the prayers.

Despite everything this week, it has been a good week.

  2. What a lovely week of fun in the sun.
    Blessings, Dawn

    1. Thanks! I’m looking forward to returning to a bit more of a normal schedule (because we are all tired out).

  3. I so sorry about Tara’s mom. Keeping them both in our prayers. It looks like you had a wonderful week, in spite of the sadness. Your kids look very happy 🙂

  4. I meant I AM so sorry. Cannot type. Huge hugs to Tara (so glad your kids are there to give them, definitely work staying up past bedtimes for).

    1. It is worth staying up for, but man we are all getting so tired. I’m very thankful she can stay 1 more week so we can see a bit more of her.

  5. Sounds like a great week… outside the news about Tara’s Mom. It must be really hard on her to see another loved one battling an advanced stage of cancer.

    1. It is, especially because of the similarities to how it went last time.
