Why being unique makes a good parent
So let me tell you 10 incredibly nerdy things about me
I have been to 5 Star Trek conventions, a couple of which were in costume
- I own a 3-D chess set from Star Trek.
- I collect comic books, and can tell you in great detail where comic book movies deviate from their inspiration. I will also do that in great detail for any movie based on a book, and tell you how they butchered the book.
- I play RPGs (role-playing-games) and regularly make jokes that reference them.
- I spent my honeymoon going to museums.
- My idea of a perfect vacation involves spending large amounts of it in museums. Or book shops.
- I regularly go to Renaissance festivals in costume.
- I went to 3 midnight release parties for Harry Potter.
- I went to the first showing of Lord of the Rings, and then went again that same day to see it. Itโs become a bit harder to do things like that, what with having to find a babysitter.
- I took as many history courses as I was allowed to without being a history major in college.
This is just a brief list of all the reasons Iโm a nerd, I could go on and on. Tell you about the difference between Marvel and DC. Make obscure jokes about statโs and explain how my dog dogged his int, but maxed his dex, and took all of the rogue feats. That joke would be hilarious if you play D&D.
So, why does this make me a good parent?
- I understand not fitting the round hole because youโre a square peg. Do you know how everyone looked at me because I liked school? I can understand and sympathize with my kids when others donโt get them because of their unusual likes.
- My kids are free to pursue their passions whatever they may be. So Princess actually likes fashion. Iโm still trying to wrap my mind around it, and she has a different definition that I do of it. So, I take her window shopping from time to time. Itโs like being tortured. But, I enjoy it with her because she enjoys it.
- Iโm a little more willing to sit back and let them try rather than do it for them or push them harder.
- They have time to be a kid. I understand that being a kid is their job right now, they donโt have to hurry into being grown ups or going from place to place because their schedule is so full.
Now, hereโs my caveat: I know being any type of person can be a good parent. The crazy hyper scheduled Mom can be a great parent. The sports obsessed Dad can be a great parent. You have to recognize what makes you a good parent or figure out how you can become a good parent.
And like many of my posts this is somewhat tongue in cheek, I find the more sleep deprived I am, and the more stressed I am, the more I tend towards giving silly answers to serious questions. So this weeks theme was 10 things you should know about me. I felt like being silly and serious at the same time.
Now, Iโm off to make sandwiches because weโre going to the pool and then weโre making duct tape swords todayโฆโฆโฆ..
For the next 10 Weeks I will be joining with many other fabulous ladies to create 10 in 10, 10 different lists and ideas for the next 10 weeks. I am really looking forward to some of these topics to see what everyone else comes up with. Come join us with your own interpretation of the 10 in 10.

We’ve never been to any of the conventions, but we have a Star Trek Encyclopedia, and if they had offered Klingon in college, I would have been first on the registration list ๐ Duct tape swords? Ferb! I know what we’re going to do today.
My kids are so amazingly excited about these swords. It’s been a huge hit.
We have so much in common.
Thank you for being so sweet to me. I have nominated you for a blog award.
https://homeschooljournal-bergblog.blogspot.com/2013/07/super-sweet-blogging-award.htmlI can’t wait to read the post! And you are incredibly sweet and helpful, so it’s easy to be sweet back ๐
So are you a Big Bang fan? You must be with your history ๐ I enjoyed reading these tidbits about you.
I LOVE Big Bang Theory, and catch all of the jokes. You know the scenes where Penny goes into a game store, it really is like that when you go in. All of the guys look at you like a foreign species.
This is a great post! Tom and I are very different – I’m a geeky theater girl, he’s a cool kid athlete. I think that makes for a good mix, but if we knew each other in high school we probably wouldn’t have been together then!!!
That does sound like a great combination. I had a lot of fun writing this post, and thinking how those helped me parent.
I agree – and LOVE your caveat that there are a ton of ways to be a great parent!
As I was writing it, I didn’t want people to think I meant only nerds could be great parents. I can say it has really helped my parenting, but I know some uber sports fans that are great parents too, and I’m sure every other category of parent. The hard part is when you get an uber sports fan parents and a nerdy kid, then they speak past each other and there’s lots of hard feelings unintentionally.
I loved reading these about you.. I only ones I could say ditto to were # 7 and the second half of #5. I love that you related this back to your parenting!
I’ve seen SOOOOOO many parents who have a kid that doesn’t fit the normal mode trying to figure out what to do, and I like my unusual kiddos.
Of course, I’d probably be so confused by a sports fanatic kid, I’m aware of sports, but not into sports.
I think if you did have a kid into sports you would be fine though. Since you want them to be themselves you would encourage that part of them as well! Sammy likes sports but doesn’t love them. I grew up playing a lot of sports and so I think he has wanted to try some for that reason.. but as of yet he hasn’t found the thing that just “clicks” for him. Whether its sports, music, art, science, etc. and that is okay. I am just glad he is having fun just trying different things!
Thank you so much for this very amusing post! You absolutely made me happy today! You are an awesome parent with a lot of amazing ideas! I hope I can be as awesome as you. Thanks for sharing this!
When a parent feels free to be themselves the children will inevitably follow. I always enjoy the company of those who are comfortable in their own skin. And they always make the world more colourful simply by being in it. Great post!
I sympathise over the sleep. Mine’s yuck at the moment too!
I don’t think you are that weird. ๐ I am not a game player myself, but I married one. He is actually working on a game of his own (not sure if you would have heard of it, Biomechanic Dino Battles). And we are headed back to GenCon this summer. We met fencing in college (with swords, not fence posts), and we go to Ren Fest every chance we get (if I could sew well it would be in costume)! I have always been the weird quiet kid that would rather read then socialize; now I am the weird quiet kid that would rather blog then socialize because that is easier to do with kids around! lol
I was that same kid in high school. Got lots of strange looks, I can tell you.
I might sneak into your luggage when you go to GenCon, if I can figure out how to do that. My best friend has gone for several years now.Oh, and if your husband wants a family of testers……..
Well you offered, so I just emailed you! ๐
Thank you, I really needed to read this…Best wishes from Spain!
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched while my son tried to engage another child in play but struggled because the other kid didn’t know who Fin Fang Foom was or didn’t know the difference between red Hulk and green Hulk. And it goes both ways, my son has no clue who Sponge Bob is! Reading blogs like yours, knowing there are other geek families out there, gives me hope that someday my son will find his “crowd” where he can fit in. Thank you for being true to you!
Bring him over here, and he’ll fit right in. We don’t watch Sponge Bob because I find him incredibly annoying, so my kids have no clue about him either.
