Why Did the Exodus Happen Review
Do you want to hear something funny? There were slave owners who made Bibles without the book of Exodus because they did not want their enslaved people to know it was possible to escape slavery. They didn’t want them to know that God led the Israelites out of slavery, so they just removed the entire book of Exodus. This is also part of why several Christians helped lead the movement to ban slavery in the United States. But that is not a Bible lesson, that is actually a really good history lesson and to talk about how people can use religion for good and evil in their politics and actually was a fun debate we did once in our US history lessons. But, today we’re talking about why did the Exodus happen, and the great new book talking about that. It’s a fun Bible study/history book for your elementary kid.

(Danika gave me a copy of her book, opinions are my own and I have affiliate links in here)
Is this a history book or a Bible study?
Much like Who Was Moses book, this is neither one or the other. It covers historical events and it covers theological events.
Why Did the Exodus Happen? is like a sermon or history lesson for a 3rd grader with great illustrations taught at the perfect level for 3rd-graders.
Danika slowly works through step by step why the Exodus had to happen (obviously), then what happened, and what happened after the Israelites left Egypt.
The cool theology of Why Did the Exodus Happen?
Now, the part I really like about the book is the theology. Each chapter title is an attribute of God.

Then the events of the chapter go on to explain how we see God is faithful or sovereign. That is a nice bit of theology to bring in to a book written for elementary kids, all while bringing in the verses to back up what she said.
You know I like me some cross-references and a good reference list at the end.
Yes, I am a nerd. I fully own this.
Why is it important to understand the events of the Exodus?
Yes, that is the entire point of this book, but I’ll give you a short answer.
I’ll just quote John, “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.” Jesus is the Passover Lamb who fulfills the promise we see in Exodus. Just like God kept the promise given to the Israelites before they went to Egypt.
So, Danika spends an entire book giving us why it is important and the events of the Exodus.

The Exodus casts a long shadow
Jesus is the Passover lamb, but also with His death, He buys us from slavery and frees us from death to life.
We can read a whole slew of verses in the New Testament telling us all about it, and Danika pulls in several to illustrate God’s character and tie that into each chapter as we go through the book.
This makes me happy. It’s kind of silly just how happy this makes me.

Danika weaves all of this together

Danika did an excellent job putting together several different important things we need for this book to work:
- She gave us maps so we can see where the events take place, and why things had to happen where they did.
- Timelines, so we know when they happened and the order it happens in.
- Then finally why it matters to us, so these aren’t just cool stories we hear.
All of this is interspersed throughout the book so you aren’t waiting for the end of the book to learn why it’s important.
