Science Sunday: Is soda bad for you?

by

Do your kids ask “Why is soda bad for your teeth?”  Or the ever popular “Why can’t I have all the soda I want?”  Well mine do.  Non.  Stop.

See if you’re an adult than you instantly cry “Yes!”  to the first question and list many reasons why.  However, if you’re a little kid, you don’t automatically know.  My kids have been asking why I don’t let them have sodas more often, after all they’re so “yummy.”

Why is soda bad for your teeth

Finally I decided to show them.  The full details of “Why is soda bad for your teeth?” are over at The Studio.  Here I wanted to highlight a bit more science.

The acidity in most sodas will erode the enamel of your teeth.  While the sprite you see in the picture doesn’t turn your teeth brown like coke does, but it still erodes your enamel.

The Hmmm…Schooling Mom has a great post with more Coke experiments I’d also recommend, dispelling many urban legends about Coke.

But, all in all after doing this experiment I’m not getting as many requests for soda.  Isn’t that tooth gross?

Let’s see what others did this week:

Each week I’m spotlighting a few posts that were shared previously.  Many posts get linked up later in the week and they don’t always get as many clicks as they deserve, so I’m trying to spotlight a few every week.

I actually pinned this post from Highhill Homeschool twice, once under Flying Creatures, and a second time under Creation to Christ.  I can use the idea of studying silk worms in both of those studies.

No Doubt Learning has started up a fun series on wormswith several other blogs.  If your little one is obsessed with creepie crawlies go check it out.

Peace, Love, and Homeschool shared about building a rocket.  I had to laugh when she said her son had almost finished building it before she got her camera out. I felt her pain.

Hmmm…I guess that’s why we swallow the pop instead of holding it in our mouth all day 🙂

    1. Probably so. Downside of my teaching the kids this, now they want to know why I drink so much Dr Pepper……

    2. Oh me too, only it’s diet coke! For me it’s a case of ‘do as I say, not as I do!’ – not always the most effective way of parenting!!

    3. I know, they keep looking at me reproachfully and asking why I don’t drink more milk. I know it would not be helpful to say “Because I don’t like the taste of plain white milk.”

I remember at a science fair as a kid that someone did their project using teeth and different kinds of soda. Yuck! This is a great visual for young ones!

    1. I remember someone doing the same project as well. It grossed me out so much in 5th grade.

  3. I love that you are teaching your kids that soda isn’t good for them. What a great way to teach. Was that brown thing a tooth?

    1. Yes it was after sitting in coke for a week. Isn’t that gross?

  4. I should try these experiments with my 15 year old! I don’t drink soda so I never buy it, but my kids are allowed to order it if we go out to eat (maybe twice a month) and Collin doesn’t like it. Unfortunately, Tyler thinks it is the best thing on earth so that is why he needs to see this!!!

So sorry I don’t get here much lately. I am reading, but commenting is so hard for me these days. I truly miss all of my bloggy friends!

    1. We miss you too, but we all understand little ones are hard to keep up with at times.

  5. Intriguing experiment but definitely gross! I can’t believe how brown that tooth is! I wonder what orange juice would do?

    1. That would be interesting to find out.

  6. I finished my Fungi post after all. Probably nothing for next week, however, because Katie and Steven are doing the teaching.

    1. That is so cool your older kids can do the teaching! How exciting!

That tooth does look pretty awful.

  8. Thanks for linking to my coke post…since I totally spaced and didn’t link up with your science sunday when it happened. (Bad blogging girl!!) We really had fun with the experiments. It’s neat to see what all that pop does…or doesn’t…do! 🙂

    1. No problem. I thought it was pretty cool when you did it.

  9. Ewwww… gross! Good thing we are not soda drinkers here. In fact, Anna mostly drinks only water. Her going out indulgence is chocolate milk.
